Side quests are plentiful in Fallout 4, and they offer a great vacation from the main questline and expansion packs that often feature a more serious tone. There are lots of unique locations for you to discover across each and every side quest, but perhaps none are more interesting than the Yangtze, a submarine near the city of Boston.

In "Here There Be Monsters," you'll get to meet a Chinese Ghoul from before the war and explore one of the most fascinating locations in the Fallout series. Here's everything you need to know to complete "Here There Be Monsters".

How To Complete "Here There Be Monsters"

Below you can find every step you'll need to complete to finish "Here There Be Monsters." There are a few different choices you can make throughout the quest, primarily relating to your reward, so make sure to read the dialogue choices carefully.

Travel To The Shamrock Taphouse

The first thing you need to do is travel to the Shamrock Taphouse, which is the location on the map above. Walk around to the back of the building, and you'll find a dock with the child Donny. Speak to Donny, and he'll explain that he sees a monster in the water. However, it's not a monster, but a submarine named the Yangtze.

Enter The Yangtze

After speaking to Donny, dive into the water and swim to the Yangtze, then enter through the door your quest marker points towards. Upon entering the submarine, you'll meet a Ghoul named Captain Zao, who has been living in the submarine for 200 years. Captain Zao originally came to America from China in the nuclear submarine.

Captain Zao will explain that the Yangtze isn't currently in working order. This is where you can offer to help him with the repairs. Zao will tell you that the submarine needs a new Dampening Coil, which you can find in the Saugus Ironworks.

You can pass a few speech checks of varying difficulty to earn a higher reward upon completion of your task, but whether you pass them is dependent on your Charisma stat's level. He'll first offer Pre-War Money, then Caps, and finally, his unique sword.

Travel To The Saugus Ironworks

Fallout 4 Saugus Ironworks On The Map

You now must travel to the Saugus Ironworks, which is located on the map above. This location is home to many flamer-wielding enemies, so they'll deal a lot of damage during the fight. It's easier to use stealth to avoid detection entirely, but if that's not an option, then wear a suit of Power Armor to fight the enemies.

Enter the building, defeating the enemies as they appear. Once inside, follow the quest marker through the location until you reach the furnace, which contains the Dampening Coil inside it. You'll encounter an NPC names Slag inside the room with the furnace and although you can briefly converse with him, he'll attack you no matter what happens, so prepare for a fight with multiple raiders.

After defeating every raider in sight, you can then take the Dampening Coil from the further section of the room and leave the building. Now you can travel back to the Yangtze, either by walking or fast traveling.

Retrieve Nuclear Fuel

Fallout 4 Glowing One Inside The Yangtze

Enter the Yangtze again and speak to Captain Zao. He'll ask you to complete one more task for him, which is retrieving Nuclear Fuel from the submarine itself. Unfortunately, it's easier said than done because there are Feral Ghouls waiting for you deeper into the Yangtze, so you should prepare by bringing a powerful weapon to deal with them.

Follow your quest marker and head through the door, which will take you through a linear path of rooms with many Feral Ghouls to face. These Ghouls belong to Captain Zao's crew from before the war, which is one of the reasons why he didn't want to retrieve the fuel himself.

Feral Ghouls aren't the only threat to your safety, however, as you'll also encounter sections on the submarine that offer heavy radiation. Bringing a few Radaway or Rad-X items is very useful if you don't have high radiation resistance. Wearing a suit of Power Armor is an even better way to mitigate the radiation problem.

Inside the final room is where you'll encounter the Nuclear Fuel, but unfortunately, a Glowing One is guarding it, so you need to defeat a tough enemy before retrieving it. You can try to use stealth to get a damage multiplier hit in before starting the fight, but there isn't any other way around fighting this enemy.

Once the Glowing One is dead, follow the marker to the fuel and pick it up. Now walk through the main door with the quest marker and speak to Captain Zao. He'll explain that you need to insert the Dampening Coil and Nuclear Fuel into the Yangtze.

However, you can only insert it in the order of the Dampening Coil and then Nuclear Fuel. Reversing this order will destroy the submarine and you along with it.

After this is done, speak to Zao to retrieve your reward, which will be dependent on which Charisma checks you passed earlier in the quest. If you passed the final check, then Captain Zao will gift you his sword, which is a standard Chinese Officer's Sword with a unique name. You'll also earn three Homing Beacons, which allow you to call for a small-scale nuclear strike in the Commonwealth's open world. This concludes "Here There Be Monsters."
