It’s hard to believe that Fallout 4 is already over six years old. Despite its age, the game is still the most recent installment in the mainline Fallout series. Fallout 4 continues to be played by many gamers who adore the unique post-apocalyptic setting that Bethesda does such a good job of building.

There are some relatable things every player has done in Fallout 4, but there are also some things that players wished they didn’t do in the game. Mistakes can range from little errors to game-changing decisions. These are the things players should never do in Fallout 4.

10 Hurry Through The Story

One of the biggest mistakes you can make in an open-world game is to rush through the story. Typically, you want to save the main story for last, allowing you to explore the setting and take everything in before beating the game.

Things are no different in Fallout 4. Some of the best moments in the game can be experienced by doing side quests. Through side quests, you’ll meet interesting characters, team up with some useful companions and have a better overall experience. There is so much to do in Fallout 4; you won’t want to miss out.

9 Forget To Save

Even though Fallout 4 has been out for over half a decade, there are still some bugs that rise to the surface occasionally. After all, it’s a Bethesda game, so you’re going to want to save fairly often to avoid any game-breaking glitches.

Thankfully, there’s a quicksave feature, making it very easy to save. Seriously, there’s no way you can forget to save with such a great feature. It’s also a good idea to quicksave before you do something wild and dangerous. That way, if something happens, it’s no big deal. Just reload the save, and you’re back in action.

8 Go For A Swim

A pool of contaminated water in Fallout 4

Water in Fallout has always been bad. It’s full of radiation and will cause tons of bodily harm, so you’ll want to stay away from it as much as possible. Never go for a swim in Fallout 4 and definitely don’t drink anything other than purified water. We know it says to press the button to drink - but don't do it.

Only if you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place in Survival mode should you ever even think of drinking unpurified water. Most of the time, the radiation trade-off is not worth it. To make things easier for yourself, just avoid water entirely.

7 Be A Solo Adventurer

While it’s quite atmospheric to walk around the post-apocalyptic setting of The Commonwealth alone, the game is best experienced with a companion. Whether it’s Dogmeat, Codsworth, Preston, or someone else, the game is more fun when you’ve got a buddy alongside you to share those experiences with.

If you want to go solo, then you’re going to have to master the combat system of Fallout 4 and, to do so, you’ll want the Lone Wanderer perk. This perk will increase your carrying capacity as well as your damage resistance and output as long as you don’t have a companion.

6 Max Out Your Attributes

It can be really tempting to max out your attributes in Fallout 4, but the benefits aren’t worth it. You’ll find some items throughout your journey that will improve certain attributes, allowing you to reach their cap without investing the points to get there.

For this reason, it’s best to avoid putting any stat above eight during character creation. You’re better off keeping your attributes lower and gathering items, such as Vault-Tec bobbleheads, to improve your stats. It’s going to take a bit of work to locate every bobblehead, but the permanent stat increases are amazing.

5 Lose Your Power Armor

Power Armor is arguably the most useful item in the game, so when you get one of the best pieces of power armor in Fallout 4, you should do your best to make sure you never lose it. You can abandon your Power Armor almost anywhere, and it will remain there until you reclaim it.

It’s very easy to lose your Power Armor while you’re out and about. Of course, you could locate your Power Armor on your map, but for some peace of mind, it’s a good idea to keep it at a settlement.

4 Use Your Fusion Cores Early

Fusion Cores are very rare commodities in Fallout 4. They’re needed to use Power Armor, making them vital to the game. If you stumble on a few of them early on in your adventures, make sure not to use them right away.

A lot of players use up their Fusion Cores immediately because they want to use their awesome new Power Armor, but it’s a better idea to wait until the right time, such as in a difficult battle. Nothing is worse than using a Fusion Core for absolutely no reason and wasting such a scarce item.

3 Waste Your Special Ammunition

There are many powerful heavy weapons that use special ammunition in Fallout 4, so you don’t want to waste any of this ammo. The Big Boy and Nuka-Nuke Launcher are some of the most fun weapons to use in the game, but their ammo is very rare.

If you encounter a Deathclaw or another similarly powerful enemy, then load up a Big Boy and take them down. There’s no need to waste any special ammo on enemies that are easy to beat. Instead, it’s a good idea to save your ammo until you really need it.

2 Gloss Over The Junk

There is junk everywhere you look in Fallout 4. Whether it’s the ground, a shelf, a desk, or a locker, you’ll likely find some kind of junk lying around. It may seem like a hassle to go around collecting every single piece of loot you can find, but in Fallout 4, one person’s junk is another person's very useful junk.

All of this junk may seem useless on the surface, but it has many purposes, such as crafting and modifying. In a pinch, junk can even be sold to a merchant for a quick buck.

1 Forget To Empty Your Pockets

Your inventory will quickly fill up with junk if you go around collecting all of it, so you’ll definitely want to clear out as much of it as possible. That being said, this doesn’t mean you should go into a general store and trade all of your junk. Instead, make your way to a workbench and use it all to craft items.

By using your junk to craft items, you will not only create useful gear, but will clear up some inventory space, so you can collect even more junk without getting frustrated.
