Bethesda has announced a new Fallout game, and rumors say it might even have multiplayer.

After 24 hours of broadcasting a “please stand by” screen on Twitch, Bethesda finally released their teaser video leading into E3 2018. The video shows empty slices of life from Vault 76, a control vault that was first mentioned in the very first Fallout game and most likely takes place in Virginia.

We know based on the Fallout universe’s vault numbering conventions that Vault 76 is likely further eastward than westward in the continental United States. The song broadcast during the trailer, John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” makes specific mention of West Virginia and seems like a pretty obvious clue for the game’s location.

We also know from 1997’s turn-based Fallout that Vault 76 is located somewhere in Virginia due to records found in the Citadel.

We have Reddit to thank for even further narrowing down Vault 76’s likely location. “Country Roads” first mentioned the Blue Ridge Mountains, but user Merker6 made the connection with the area and the former Congressional fallout shelter located at Greenbrier Resort on the West Virginia Border.

It’d be just like Fallout to use historical sights as locations for their game.

What we know of Vault 76 comes mostly from Citadel records. The vault is one of 17 control vaults scattered across the US to compare against the various experimental vaults. About 500 occupants went inside the vault in 2076--one year before the Great War. The vault was slated to open 20 years after the fighting had stopped and rebuilt America.

However, the date that can be read off the pip-boy in the teaser video reads “Oct. 27, 2102”. We’re not sure if this means that the vault opened in 2096 as planned and we’re simply jumping in several years later, or if something happened and Vault 76 opened a little further behind schedule.

There’s also rumors that this latest Fallout game will include some form of multiplayer. Kotaku is reporting that this game will be unlike previous single-player Fallouts as it is being made by both Bethesda’s Maryland studio and Austin studio.

Bethesda Austin was formerly known as Battlecry Studio while they were working on a multiplayer shooter called Battlecry. That game was later cancelled, but aspects may have found their way into this Fallout 76.

Stay tuned for more at Bethesda’s E3 conference which takes place on June 10th.
