One of the biggest mysteries associated with Fallout 76 is that of the Mothman Cult. The cult was introduced when the game released using a series of secretive areas, holodisks, and notes left by the followers. Many players theorized that the cult would make a return with the addition of the Wastlelanders DLC.

While they were right, there is still much about the cult that remains completely shrouded in mystery. It's obvious that the cult leans more towards being one of the evil factions, but their reasoning is shrouded in mystery. Below we go over everything gamers currently know about this mysterious organization.

10 They Are Low Leveled

Strangely enough, the majority of cultists you will fight in the game are level one. This makes them easy to take down for even the newest players. There are some higher-ranked cultists that are level nine and hold more powerful weapons. One in the basement of the museum even holds a flamethrower.

If you're looking for a challenge, though, then this may not the faction for you to take on.

9 They Think Mothman Guides & Protects Them

While the more exact and precise nature of any direct interactions the cult has had with Mothman still largely remain a mystery, they do obviously believe he guides them. When sneaking around, you will hear the cultists asking Mothman to protect them from the horrors of the land and giving what would seem to be sermons of a sort.

Many notes also outline the idea that they believe Mothman tried to warn them of the Great War.

8 They Perform Human Sacrifice

When you first arrive at Point Pleasant, you can find a ritual site by the river. At this ritual site, you will find a table set up with several candles around it. On the table will be a skeleton that was clearly sacrificed by the cultists.

There is no proof that the current batch of cultists sacrifices other humans, though given their hostility, we're not at all dissuaded from the idea.

7 Their Main Base Is Point Lookout

Despite the original cult hiding out and being stationed in the Lucky Hole Mines, the current cultists seem to prefer Point Lookout. It's a bit strange seeing how well built up the Lucky Hole Mine is and the fact that it would give them much more protection from the elements.

Instead, they choose to stay near the town where the cult first took root.

6 They Existed Before The War

As mentioned above, you could find Mothman shrines and notes before the Wastelanders update. Surprisingly, these notes discuss events preceding the Great War. From the implications, the cult laid low and even bought their own plot of land to keep from being noticed.

This, of course, ended badly as the blast took them out.

5 They Succeded In Finding Mothman

A note found in Point Lookout states that the cult did, in fact, succeed in their attempts to summon Mothman. While the interactions between the cultist and the creature remain a bit mysterious, the encounter was enough to make them believe that he would protect them in some way.

It is also hinted at the Mothman wasn't hostile towards the cult.

4 They Don't Take Outsiders

One of the things players were most excited about was the possibility to join the Mothman Cult. With the DLC adding in factions, many fans thought that they would be able to delve deeper into the lore of the cult. As of right now, though, cultists will attack you, and there is no way to join.

With future updates planned, there is a chance that we could see more interactions with the cultists.

3 The Cult Was Led by a Priestess

One of the few things we know about the pre-war cult is that they were led by a priestess. Later on, the cult started to listen to a man named Jeff Lane, who successfully led the cultist away from their original deity. He even convinced them to follow orders that directly contradicted what the priestess told them.

This seems to point to the possibility of a power struggle within the cult.

2 They are Spread Across West Virginia

The cult didn't just stay at the mine and in the basement of the Mothman shop. Several ritual sites can be found around the map, including a newer one that is outside of the world boundary. This is also backed up by the fact that he player can run into small pockets of cultists across West Virginia.

While the precise number of members remains a mystery, the cult does seem quite large and widespread.

1 Their Armor Is Weak

The cultist must truly believe that they are being protected because they have horrible armor. Most of the cultists build seem to make their armor out of wood. This isn't a very sturdy material, and while it looks good, it won't stop many of the wasteland creatures from causing harm.

Even the level nine cultists have rather weak armor. That said, they don't seem to be above using technologically advanced firearms, so this choice is rather bizarre.
