Yesterday, the Steel Dawn updpate appeared in Fallout 76 after accidentally going live on Xbox. Rather than roll the update back, Bethesda decided to just launch the update on every platform after a brief moment of server downtime.

Steel Dawn brings a big new Brotherhood of Steel questline and a new S.C.O.R.E. board, but also a very special item that was requested by a differently-abled player.

Last month, Reddi Kytahll (who goes by Kelly) posted a request to Bethesda in the Fallout 76 subreddit. "I'm disabled irl and I would really REALLY love a wheelchair I can place in my C.A.M.P.," she wrote. "It would make me so happy to have that little piece of me in my creations. And I think a lot of other people would enjoy it too (maybe for when you recreate a hospital/medbay)."

Kelly noted that the "model already exists in-game," and it wouldn't take much work to turn that model into a usable piece of furniture. Given Fallout 76 features several PvP aspects, a functional wheelchair might cause problems for game balance, but a cosmetic item for use in camp seemed like a slam dunk.

Bethesda agreed and responded to say that they would add the wheelchair first on the PTS, and then to the base game in the upcoming update. With Steel Dawn's unexpected arrival, the wheelchair has finally arrived.

And Kelly is quite happy about it.

“I know it’s just a furniture item, but I hope in the future of gaming we can get more disabled characters,” Kelly told Kotaku in an interview. “I know it would’ve helped me as a teen, as I struggled immensely with how I viewed myself. It often gets connected with being useless, and that’s how I felt growing up. All I can say is representation matters.”

You can find the wheelchair cosmetic in the second set of chairs in the chair section of the in-game camp menu.
