The Fallout series has given us plenty of characters to know over the years, regardless of whether we love or hate them. Yet the Fallout timeline, even in just the main games, spans decades, and many characters have come and gone since then. Despite this though, there have been a few Fallout characters that have shown up more than once.

Like its sister series The Elder Scrolls, Fallout has featured a returning character here and there that serves as a great callback to a past game. Plus, it's always great to catch up with an old friend to see what they are up to now.

The Mysterious Stranger

The Mysterious Stranger in Fallout 3 and 4

His identity is mysterious, but when he shows up to one-shot an enemy and save you, you can certainly turn a blind eye. The Mysterious Stranger has shown up in each Fallout game as sort of a shadowy guardian that helps you occasionally while you journey across the wasteland, provided you have the perk of the same name.

While probably not the same person, each stranger can be easily identified by his hat and trench coat that make him stand out from the crowd. Creepy how he seemingly stalks you but whatever.

Doctor Henry (Fallout 2 And New Vegas)

Doctor Henry in Fallout 2 and New Vegas

New Vegas featured the series' return towards the west coast of the U.S where the pre-Bethesda Fallout games were mostly set. Fans of those games can actually see an old face show up in the form of Doctor Henry from Fallout 2.

Doctor Henry was a former Enclave scientist who set up shop in NCR town after he disagreed with the Enclave's method. Eventually he would find his way over to Jacobstown, where he can be found in New Vegas, where the Courier finds out he's trying to help Marcus with curing the Nightkin of their schizophrenia from their use of stealth boys.

Marcus (Fallout 2 And New Vegas)

Speaking of Marcus, he too appeared in Fallout 2 as a companion in that game. Marcus is a super mutant that originally served the Master, the main antagonist of the first Fallout, but had his intelligence remain. After the Master's defeat, he would wander the wasteland until he would eventually form the town of Broken Hills with a Brotherhood of Steel knight he befriended named Jacob.

Marcus would become the town's mayor and sheriff where he would encounter the Chosen One, Fallout 2's protagonist, who helped save the town. He joined them in their fight against the Enclave and parted ways with them. By the time of New Vegas, he has established the isolated Jacobstown to serve as a safe haven for peaceful super mutants.

Sierra Petrovita (Fallout 3 And 4)

Some people are just really obsessed with something and Sierra Petrovita is one of those people. Sierra is an avid collector of anything related to Nuka-Cola and has a huge collection of Nuka-Cola merchandise at her home in Girdershade. She even started her own Nuka-Cola fan club where she serves as the club's president, recording secretary and treasurer.

Just when you think she wouldn't show up again, she shows up again in the Nuka-World DLC for Fallout 4. She made a ten year odyssey to the amusement park where she hopes to find the Nuka-Cola formula. Some might even notice her teeth are pretty yellow in Fallout 4 from drinking the stuff.

Harold (Fallout 1, 2, And 3)

From left to right: Harold in Fallout 1, 2 and 3

Harold is a rather comical personality with an equally unique appearance that came from FEV exposure after his merchant caravan stumbled upon it at the Mariposa Military base. He seems to be perfectly fine with his mutation in the first Fallout where he is a bright personality in an otherwise dreadful time.

He turns up again in Fallout 2 with a tree branch growing out of his head that he has named Bob. By the time Fallout 3 rolls around, Harold is in the Capital Wasteland where Bob has now overtaken him completely as Harold is now basically a tree implanted into the ground, asking to be killed.

Dogmeat (Fallout 1, 2, 3, And 4)

Everyone needs a loyal companion that lifts them up in the toughest times and Dogmeat is that companion. Dogmeat is a german shepard that can be recruited as a companion in each of the numbered Fallout games.

While each of these Dogmeats are not the same one from the first Fallout, each dog is a good boy that you happen to stumble upon in the wasteland that grows attached to you. Thus starts a bond that not even the most dangerous of the wasteland's threats can break.

Arthur Maxson (Fallout 3 And 4)

Arthur Maxson in Fallout 3 and 4

A descendant of the founder of the Brotherhood of Steel, Arthur Maxson is first seen in Fallout 3 as a rather timid but bright child being mentored by Elder Owyn Lyons and his daughter Sarah. Arthur showed real potential and would have to put that into practice sooner rather than later.

After the deaths of both Owyn and Sarah Lyons, the Brotherhood would nearly crumble under the poor leadership of subsequent elders before Arthur would rise to become elder himself after furthering honing his skills. In Fallout 4, he has proven to be a charismatic and effective leader for the Brotherhood despite his young age with a great fashion sense too. Just look at that jacket.

MacCready (Fallout 3 And 4)

Arthur Maxson is not the only kid we get to see grow up. There is also another kid that becomes an adult in Robert MacCready. In Fallout 3, MacCready is the brash mayor of Little Lamplight, a settlement in a cave that is inhabited by only kids. Once they grow up, they are kicked out and have to move out of the place.

Evenutally MacCready himself grew up, left Little Lamplight and wound up having a son named Duncan. Duncan would end up suffering from a mysterious illness that left him too weak to travel with MacCready to find a cure. That would eventually lead him to the Commonwealth where he can become a possible companion.

Tandi (Fallout 1 And 2)

Tandi in Fallout 1 and 2

Mentioned throughout New Vegas is former NCR president Tandi who was arguably the greatest president in the NCR's history. Before that though, she lived with her father, Aradesh, on the farm of Shady Sands in the first Fallout. She would then need rescuing from the Great Khan's and after her and her father's encounter with the Vault Dweller, would be inspired to build Shady Sands into a prospering settlement.

This would eventually lead into the formation of the NCR in which Tandi herself would become its second president. The Chosen One can meet an elderly Tandi in Fallout 2 with the same youthful spirit she had in the first game and establishing herself as one of the most influential people of the post-war world.

Madison Li (Fallout 3 And 4)

Madison Li in Fallout 3 and 4

Much like Tandi, Madison Li is another important person that played a major role in two different Fallout games. In Fallout 3 she was a close confidant and co-worker of the player's father in the game where she worked on Project Purity. A project that with her help, would cleanse the waters of the Capital Wasteland of radiation by working with the Brotherhood of Steel.

Eventually she would leave the Brotherhood and by the time Fallout 4 rolls around, is now a scientist working for the Institute. She is a quest giver if you side with the Institute but if you side with the Brotherhood, she can be convinced to return to the Brotherhood.
