However, with these intricacies often come complications, and some of the quests in New Vegas can be quite hard to decipher. Oh My Papa is one such side quest. While seemingly simple on the face of things, the branching story can lead to some confusion.

How To Start Oh My Papa

Papa Khan in Fallout New Vegas

Oh My Papa is a relatively important side quest in Fallout: New Vegas. Your actions during this quest will have an impact on what the Great Khans do at the game’s conclusion.

You gain access to this mission as part of the game’s main plot. At a certain point, you will be directed to speak with Great Khans. This is where the side quest will begin.

To begin this mission, head to Great Khans' base in Red Rock Canyon. Once there make your way to the top of the cliff and enter the Khans’ Longhouse. This will be marked on your Pit-Boy.

Make sure you do this during the day.

Once inside the Longhouse, you will want to speak with Papa Khan. Exhaust all the dialogue options here.

During this chat, you will find out that the Khans are aligned with Caesar’s Legion. If you are working with the NCR, you will be told to destroy the Khans if they are working with the Legion.

Having exhausted your conversation options with Papa Khan, you will want to do the same with the two other people in the room. These characters are named Karl and Regis.

To get full access to all the dialogue options here, you will need to sneak into the backroom of the Longhouse and open the chest on the floor to read Karl’s Journal. Having read that, return to the NPCs and run through the conversations.

You will know this is complete when a new dialogue choice becomes available with Papa Khan, allowing you to request that the Khan’s end their alliance with the Legion. At this point, Papa Khan will always refuse your request, but ask anyway.

Now leave the Longhouse. Upon exiting, Regis will approach and force you into a conversation. Here he will explain that Papa Khan can be convinced to betray the Legion on one condition, that being that the idea is supported by his four closest advisors; Regis, Jack, Melissa, and Diane.

This will begin the quest in earnest.

Before you get to work on this side quest, speak with Regis again. He will let slip that if he was the leader of the Khans, he would side with the NCR, not the Legion, thus opening another outcome to this story.

The Fast Way: Assassinate Papa Khan

The Courier's Stash DLC for Fallout: New Vegas

This option is only viable if you plan to side with the NCR at the end of the game, and will not allow you to work with the Khans if you plan to go the Yes Man route.

To get this outcome underway, return to Colonel Moore of the NCR. Tell them that Papa Khan has no interest in working with the NCR. Moore will then task you with assassinating the leader of the Great Khans.

Papa Khan can be killed at two times of day without alerting the rest of the camp.

If you wish to take out the leader in daylight, Papa Khan spends his afternoon behind the Longhouse. Here, you can sneak up behind him and use a silenced weapon to kill him. Or, if you are one for theatrics, pickpocket, and leave an explosive in his possession. Either way, the camp will be none the wiser.

If you wish to kill the Khan under the cover of night, you must pickpocket his room key. Once the key has been stolen, head to his room, at around 2 or 3 am, and kill him with a melee or silenced weapon.

Mister Sandman is a useful perk to have here.

Now that Papa Khan is dead, you will want to go back to Regis and inform him of the events. His tent is the one with the skulls outside. Go through the conversation with him to complete what Moore tasked you with doing.

The Long Way: Convince The Advisors

Speaking with Regis in Fallout New Vegas

This route is viable for both the NCR ending and Yes Man’s ending.

This is going to take a little while and will require you to have quite a high speech skill — at least 75. Ultimately, you need to convince three out of the four advisors, and discredit Karl. Once this is achieved you can get the Khans to leave the wasteland (Yes Man ending) or join the NCR’s battle against the Legion (NCR Ending).

To convince Jack, you need a speech skill of 60. Find him at the Red Rock Drug Lab, an area found North of the camp consisting of a few trailers standing together. Here, simply pass the speech check to gain his trust.

If you have gained Jack’s trust, there is no need to convince Diane, but if you wish to do so, talk to her at the Labs and begin the Aba Daba Honeymoon quest. This quest is quite buggy, so make sure to gain Jack’s trust just in case.

To earn Melissa's trust, you will need to head to Great Khan Encampment, an area blocked off by a nest of Death Claws, so come prepared. Once there, talk to her and let her know that the Legion is a patriarchal and sexist group as it forbids women from joining. This will bring her to your side.

Gaining Regis’ trust and disgracing Karl are part of the same step. To do so you must have stolen Karl’s Journal as explained earlier. Bring it to Papa Khan to reveal that the Legion plans to make slaves of the Khans, thus disgracing Karl in the process.

If you would rather not steal, and you have a speech skill of 75, you can get Karl to admit to the plan in front of Papa Khan when they are in the same room.

Convincing Papa Khan

Convincing Papa Khan to join the NCR

Once you have gained the trust of the advisors and disgraced Karl, it is time to make your final plea to Papa Khan.

For your call to be successful you will need to have a speech skill of 75.

When speaking to Papa Khan, if you have passed the speech check, you will have two options. One will state: “Claim your own glory”. This will see the Khan’s leave the Mojave — pick this for the Yes Man ending.

The second option will call on them to join in the NCR’s battle against the Legion.

With that, you will have completed Oh My Papa, a crucial side quest if you wish to side with NCR at the end of the game.
