Fallout is becoming a TV series courtesy of Amazon. We got to see our first image last month giving us a tantalizing look at a character leaving one of Fallout's iconic vaults. The story of Vault 33 is sure to draw in plenty of fans, but the hope is that a unique Fallout story will bring in more than just fans of the video games.

In an interview with Lex Fridman, Bethesda head Todd Howard spoke about the Fallout TV series. He noted that Amazon isn't the first company to approach him about the potential of Fallout in TV or films.

"I can remember 10 years ago after Fallout 3 was a hit movie producers coming and [saying], 'hey, we think this would make a great movie,' and taking a lot of meetings, and I think most people would jump at that," recounted Howard. "I sort of paused and [thought], 'I don't know, what is this gonna do?' I'm not seeing the great thing here yet."

Howard was skeptical as those early pitches were to "synthesize" the games into a show, which historically hadn't worked out for video games. That all changed when Amazon approached with an idea for an entirely new story, with Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan as head writers.

"When people wanted to make a movie they wanted to tell the story of Fallout 3 or tell the story of Fallout 4, and it was 'eh.' For this, it was, 'hey let's do something that exists within the world of Fallout.' It's not retelling a game story. It's basically an area of the map, and let's tell a story here that fits in the world that we have built, doesn't break any of the rules, can reference things in the games but isn't a retelling of the games," he explained

"[It] exists in the same world but is its own unique thing, so it adds to it. While also, people who haven't played the games, who can't experience how crazy cool Fallout is, can watch the series."

Howard later added that he was "stunned" by the sets and attention to detail that the showrunners had for the Fallout franchise. "I don't want to spoil it, but when people see it I think you'll just be like 'wow.'"

Fallout arrives sometime in 2023 on Amazon Prime. In the meantime, you can read about Howard’s desire to create a time machine to give us The Elder Scrolls 6 sooner.
