Outward, an open-world fantasy RPG developed by Nine Dots Studios, an independent game studio located in Quebec, Canada, and published by Deep Silver, has shipped over one million copies. The game, which can be played in multiplayer mode or via split-screen, is set in the world of Aurai, where the cold of the night or an infected wound as well as predators lurking in the dark threaten players.

In response to its success, Guillaume Boucher-Vidal, CEO at Nine Dots Studio, stated, “It’s hard to find the words to say when something that seemed impossible happens to you. After flopping with our two previous titles, I had very conservative expectations and thought selling 100,000 copies would be a great step up from our previous attempts. To have sold ten times that is surreal.”

He added that although the game isn’t perfect, “it has a lot of heart,” noting that despite lacking resources at the outset, the team’s enthusiasm helped propel the development of the game. He also stated that he hopes that now that the game has an audience and the team has experience and resources, the game will continue to thrive.

Additional downloadable content titled The Three Brothers for Outward is expected to launch on December 15 for PC and in 2021 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. New features will include:

  • City Building Mechanic: Rebuilding Sirocco: Players can create their own landmark in Aurai and help rebuild the Refugee Camp into New Sirocco.
  • New Area: Caldera: Caldera, a new landscape, will feature new dungeons, quests and locations with countless treasures for adventurers to find.
  • In addition, the DLC will include new skills and weapons like grenades. Weapons can also be enchanted to help in the fight for survival.

Publisher Deep Silver and developer Nine Dots have also released a new developer diary that features downloadable quests, mechanics, weapons, and much more. Nine Dots, which has been developing games since 2011, has released two other titles: Brand and GoD Factory. Outward is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam.
