Several gaming insiders are claiming that the next Far Cry game will be more online-oriented.

The latest rumour on the focus of the next Far Cry appeared in the latest Axios newsletter, with Stephen Totilo going into detail on the game's development process and the current critical reception to it.

Towards the end of the Axios newsletter, Totilo makes note of the future of Far Cry, saying, "Far Cry 6” may well be a hit, as “Far Cry 5” was before it, but Ubisoft appears to know a shake-up is needed. During a podcast in June, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier noted that the next “Far Cry” could go in a “radically different direction.” That tracks with a source of my own who said the company was exploring a more online-oriented approach for a sequel".

It seems that several sources are pointing to the next Far Cry game diving into an online focus. Every Far Cry since Far Cry 4 has had cooperative multiplayer, but it seems like the next entry could go further to include more players and modes. It's not clear if the next Far Cry will simply have more online functionality, or be based around social multiplayer elements, but it looks like multiplayer will be the big focus.

The next Far Cry being more online-oriented probably shouldn't come as too much of a surprise considering how online most Ubisoft games are nowadays. It's possible that we could see a multiplayer Far Cry spin-off similar to The Division: Heartlands, but it seems like the project is still in the planning phases and more of an idea currently.

Helping support the rumours of Far Cry multiplayer is the fact that Far Cry 6 has some hidden QR codes that lead players to a short video featuring a cartoon gun and three arrows. Several insiders have stated that the video is a tease towards a multiplayer mode being added to Far Cry 6, or perhaps the first tease at the online-centric Far Cry.
