Games like Sam & Max and Dog’s Life have allowed you to play as a canine before - tugging on your Homeward Bound heartstrings. Kyle Banks’ open-world adventure Farewell North offers the same delight, as you'll be playing as a border collie as you traverse landscapes inspired by Scotland.

Edinburgh-based Kyle Banks’ debut game offers a unique gameplay experience as you explore different islands. Your objective is to restore color to these islands as you control a border collie following its human companion. Along the way, you will be tasked with completing various puzzles to discover why the island’s color left in the first place. Aside from the puzzle and stealth mechanics (there are monsters to avoid, too), Farewell North also narrates a touching story about saying goodbye.

Being native to Scotland, Banks used the Scottish highlands and the isles of St. Kilda as a direct source of inspiration for the game’s environments. The various creatures and monsters that appear are also inspired by Scottish folklore. The game will feature two display modes to distinguish your objective: one version is bereft of vibrancy, and the other is radiating with color once you restore its natural beauty. You will also be able to toggle between the border collie and the girl you are traveling with, as you face in-game challenges.

Fans of Journey, The Last Campfire, and Flower will no doubt enjoy Farewell Journey’s style, which spreads throughout the game’s story that deals with overcoming anxiety and depression. Banks is focused on delivering the final build of Farewell North to PC and Mac users in time for Spring 2021, but he also has an ambition for it to come to consoles some time in the future. While a demo is not featured, there are devlogs available to watch on Banks’ YouTube channel, that take you through the process of Farewell North’s development.

If you can't wait to get your hands on a beautiful adventure game, the similarly styled game Journey finally arrived on Steam back in June, one year after its PC debut on the Epic Games Store. Journey launched with full online co-op, controller support, and Steam achievements. It was also optimized for 4K that produced a welcomed enhancement of its PS3 variant.
