13 Woman In Dark (Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly)

The woman in dark spirit is a hostile one that can be encountered multiple times in Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly. Not a lot is known about the woman in dark other than that she was a Minakami villager and died due to The Repentance. Her ethereal pale tone and distorted face is downright creepy each time you encounter her.

12 Long Hair Woman (Fatal Frame)

The long hair woman who is found in the original Fatal Frame game blends a hidden visage with traditional Japanese horror influences. The long hair woman is considered a demoness who seeks to cause pain and misery to others she encounters. Her long locks of black hair stand against her terrifying demeanor as she bathes in the turmoil of the player.

11 Villagers (Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly)

The villagers are basic ghosts that haunt you as you explore throughout the entirety of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly. These ghosts don't have much detail and look like traditional specters, however, they are terrifying to encounter when you are alone. Some of these villagers hold a torch, a sickle, or a pole to ward off intruders.

10 Himuro Family Master (Fatal Frame)

The Himuro Family Master, as his title implies, was the master of the Himuro family. After The Strangling ritual went awry, he survived for a while through the suffering of the malice but ended up taking his own life. He did this because he had killed everyone in the mansion and his guilt got the better of him. He stalks the mansion with a ceremonial robe and devil-like horns on his head.

9 Girl In The Well (Fatal Frame)

The girls in the well conjures up images of The Ring. It's easy to think of Samara clambering up the rocky well walls to crawl through your TV after seven days. The girl in the well from the original Fatal Frame might give you the same nightmares.

After a fateful game of demon tag, the girl was pulled down into the well by another ghost called Long Arms. She now haunts those who get too close to her.

8 Broken Neck Woman (Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly)

The Broken Neck Woman is downright creepy to come across. Much like her name implies, she suffered a broken neck upon her death and she still bears these marks as a spirit. The broken neck woman hails from All God's Village even though it no longer exists.

After seeing the darkness spread across the land, she jumped from Heaven's Bridge to avoid the suffering the encroaching darkness would bring.

7 Matchmaker (Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water)

The Matchmaker, otherwise known as the old woman in white or the wedding celebrant is a major ghost from Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. As one of the official matchmakers, she paired up sacrificial maidens to strangers atop Mt. Hikami. Unfortunately for her, the ritual failed and she died because of it and now haunts the area.

6 Akane And Azami Kiryu (Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly)

Akane and Azami Kiryu might look familiar to you if you are a fan of the series. These sisters are the twin ghosts you would often see in marketing materials or even the game's cover in some instances.

The Kiryu sister's fate is a tragic one since they died as part of the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. They did this to save their village but they now linger on past death to bring a fright to passersby.

5 Headless Priests (Fatal Frame)

The headless priests are scary male spirits that roam around together in the original Fatal Frame. These two priests were members of the Himuro family and were tasked with seeing after the maiden during her isolation prior to the ritual.

These priests were not the only ones as there were several others in and around the family who helped with The Strangling ritual. The two from the game were ultimately murdered by Lord Himuro.

4 Kyouka Kuze (Fatal Frame 3: The Tormented)

Kyouka Kuze is the only daughter of the Kuza family and features one of the creepiest faces in the entirety of Fatal Frame 3: The Tormented. This specter has a haunting smile with dark hair covering parts of her face. During an event known as The Unleashing, Kyouka was dragged into The Rift where you met her untimely demise.

3 Limbo Woman (Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly)

The limbo woman is an enigmatic specter that appears to torment the player in Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly. While not much is actually known about her, it's obvious she was cut up and cut apart during her grisly death.

She can often be seen alongside the limbo man. They both seek to make it out of the purgatory they find themselves in.

2 Engraver (Fatal Frame 3: The Tormented)

The name engraver doesn't provide pleasant or delightful thoughts. The engraver from Fatal Frame 3: The Tormented is downright monstrous and harrowing. The engravers were actually tattoo artists in the Kuze family and they would help add ceremonial or ancestral body markings to those worthy.

Although they haunt you as you play the game, their cause of death is unknown. They are known for the sharp quills or rods that protrude from their hands.

1 Crawling Girl (Fatal Frame)

Okay, the crawling girl from the original Fatal Frame might just be the most terrifying of all the ghosts in the series. While not being a prominent character or antagonist, the crawling girl is reminiscent of scenes from The Exorcist, The Ring, or The Grudge.

This creepy girl ghost haunts the halls of the mansion and can be heard saying "let's play." To be sure, this isn't something you want to hear while exploring a derelict, haunted building at night.
