Anyone planning on buying FIFA 22 on a last-gen console will need to fork over an additional $40 if they want it to include a next-gen version of the game.
Euro 2020 might now be in the rearview mirror, but there's still plenty for football fans to sink their teeth into, and for England fans to distract themselves with. Not only the imminent start of the new season but the news surrounding FIFA 22. EA has already started to reveal the first details about the next game in the FIFA series, including the release of its very first trailer.
Hidden among the hype surrounding the reveal of the game's cover star and that it will include hyper motion technology was some not so great news. That if you buy the Standard Edition of FIFA 22 on PS4 or Xbox One, you will not be entitled to a next-gen version of the game free of charge.
To get that perk, which has been included for free in most cross-gen games, you will need to buy FIFA 22's Ultimate Edition. The Ultimate Edition will cost $99.99 while the Standard Edition clocks in at $59.99, a full $40 less. If you plan on picking up a next-gen console at some point between the launch of FIFA 22 and FIFA 23, then you'll need to stump up the extra cash, buy a new copy when your new console arrives, or just keep playing the last-gen version.

The move is somewhat of a surprising one from EA as it is a staunch u-turn when compared to FIFA 21. If you buy FIFA 21 on PS4 or Xbox One, you can upgrade it to a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version of the game absolutely free. It should also be noted that neither FIFA 21 nor FIFA 22 uses Xbox's Smart Delivery system. Even Xbox players will need to pay the extra for dual entitlement in this instance.
Dual Entitlement isn't the only thing you'll get for the extra $40. You'll also be able to play FIFA 22 four days before those who buy the Standard Edition, get a Ones To Watch player, and 4600 FIFA Points. Plus a FUT Heroes Player is you preorder before August 11, 2021.
