EA has revealed it will be keeping Preview Packs in FIFA 22, the major change it made to Ultimate Team earlier this year.

It is now only two weeks until FIFA 21 is officially replaced by FIFA 22. The latest annual installment will introduce hyper motion controls to the series for the first time and also allow you to create your very own club in career mode. Despite the appeal of that new feature, most of FIFA 22's players will once again flock to Ultimate Team.

EA has revealed some details about how FUT will look for the upcoming year, and despite ongoing battles against loot boxes around the world, it sounds like it'll be pretty much the same. The biggest takeaway is that EA's new preview packs feature will remain in place. Preview packs were introduced to FIFA 21 earlier this year to stave off those trying to reclassify loot boxes as a form of gambling.

“Following a positive reception from fans after their introduction in FIFA 21, Preview Packs will be available in FIFA 22,” EA has revealed. For those unfamiliar with how preview packs work, they allow those who are about to purchase a pack to see exactly what's inside before they decide whether it's worth spending their virtual currency.

There is a catch though, of course. If after seeing what's inside the pack you decide not to buy it, you will have to wait 24 hours before you can look inside a new preview pack. Regular packs that don't allow you to preview the contents are still available in FIFA 21 and will continue to exist alongside preview packs in FIFA 22, which means the argument over whether FUT's non-preview packs are gambling or not will continue.

The loot box argument is being approached from all angles and has ramped up to various levels depending on which country you point to. Belgium and the Netherlands have already changed their respective gambling laws to encompass loot boxes. EA's attempts to label its own loot boxes as “surprise mechanics” also didn't sit well with most people for obvious reasons.
