Last we heard, Fight Crab was supposed to release at the end of 2019 as part of the Year of the Crab. Then things happened and now we’re still technically waiting on an actual release date. You can still get the early access version of the game on Itch.io if you’re desperate for some crab fighting action, but you’ll have to be patient to get the full crab experience.
For those unaware, Fight Crab is one part fighting game, one part physics simulator, and one part Japan’s insanity leaking out to infect the rest of the world. You play as a giant immortal crab god in an alternate universe where crabs have "mastered human weapons and taken over the land."
Those weapons include guns, swords, shuriken, boomerangs, giant drills, jet engines, Kamehameha waves, and just plain old claws. There’s more, but we don’t have all day to go over all 48 different weapons.
There are 23 species represented in Fight Crab, ranging from classic Atlantic lobster to deep-sea king crab. Again, we’re not going to go over every species because they aren’t listed anywhere and I’m not a marine biologist. If you are, check out the trailer above and see how many species you can identify. They’re mostly accurate to real-life, or so I’m told.
Because every crab god is immortal, human weapons cannot kill them. However, there's one rule amongst giant crabs that they all must abide by: "He who turns his back to the ground shall know defeat..."
So the rule here is to flip your opponent on their backs to win the game. A simple concept, but the number of flailing crab limbs armed with all manner of weaponry will likely make this very complicated very quickly.
You can fight 1v1, 2v2, three-way free-for-all, or take part in a 41-battle campaign. There's rankings, training mode, various difficulty levels, and more.
Fight Crab went into early access on Steam last year but has since been removed in preparation for the full release. There's also going to be a Nintendo Switch version too, but we still don't have an official release date for either.
What we do have is PlayAsia's store listing for the physical Switch release that says cartridges will ship as of August 20. There’s supposedly a “limited supply,” so act now to get your physical copy of Fight Crab for $40 USD.
