Update: Bethesda has clarified that this free update will also be coming to the mobile iterations of Doom. Available on iOS and Android, those just got a whole lot more enticing.

Mere hours after announcing the Doom Slayers Collection, Bethesda held a live-stream to commemorate the 26th anniversary of Doom. After roughly 50 minutes, the team began talking about the recent console ports of Doom and how they would be updated in the coming months. It seems all the pleading for Final Doom was heard because it's going to be coming to both Doom and Doom 2 soon. Not only that, but Bethesda had another surprise in store.

John Romero's SIGIL, the unofficial fifth episode for the original Doom, will also be coming to the new ports. Released earlier this year in both free and paid versions (two soundtracks were made with the paid version featuring music by Buckethead), SIGIL is practically being inducted into the official Doom canon now. Interestingly, it will also be available for both Doom and Doom 2, despite being a mod for the original.

With these add-ons coming, it begs the question if more will be on the way. As a matter of fact, that seems to be the case. Bethesda showed off a whole little mod menu for the newer ports that will be offering these extra campaigns for free. Players will simply log in, select what campaign they want, download it, then play. Final Doom will be separated into its two episodes -Plutonia and TNT - Evilution-, but both will finally mark their return to consoles (versions exist on PS3 in a Doom complete collection).

One of my concerns for the new compilation was that it seemed like a bum deal. $30 for basically all of Doom isn't bad, but what's the point if not everything would be on the disc? There was also no mention of Final Doom or SIGIL, for that matter. Adding those could have been a good way to sweeten the pot.

Thankfully, we don't have to worry anymore. As far as this new update goes, mod support isn't the only thing coming. Performance is getting increased to 60 FPS, which makes a world of difference in classic Doom. There's also going to be options for aspect ratio, though it's a little sad that true widescreen won't be present.

It would be better to have all of this present on a disc, but I can live with Final Doom and SIGIL being ported. That basically justifies me grabbing Doom for the 90th time.
