It's always worth having a variety of decks built, just in case you challenge an NPC that has certain rules in place. For example, the reverse rule would require a far weaker deck, though the default cards you receive are suitable for this. For the purposes of this guide, we're going to cover ten of the strongest cards you can obtain.

Updated on April 13, 2021: Final Fantasy 14 has just implemented patch 5.5, which has made some changes to the Triple Triad mini-game. Firstly, drop rates of cards obtained from defeating NPCs in matches have been improved. Secondly, deckbuilding limitations when it comes to rarer cards have also changed, allowing players to have more control over their decks. The following information has been adjusted to reflect the new changes.

Building Your Deck Basics

Final Fantasy 14 Building Card Decks

You can build up to five decks by going into the "Character" menu, selecting "Gold Saucer", and then going into "Card Decks". Each deck consists of five different cards, and in any deck, the following restrictions are in place:

  • You can only have one Five-Star Card in a deck.
  • You can have up to two Four-Star Cards or above in your deck.

The ideal setup is to get a double A five-star card for your strongest contender, a decent four-star card that preferably has double 9s or triple 8s, and then build the rest of your deck with strong three-star cards, such as ones that feature double 8s. With the "88" cards you want to try and encompass all strengths/weaknesses, so pick cards that have different "88" sides to the others in your deck to cover all your bases.

Some NPCs can only be challenged once you have progressed past a particular main quest or side quest.
