Castrum Abania is a level 69 dungeon in Final Fantasy 14: Stormblood. Before your campaign to rid Gyr Abania of the Imperials can continue, you'll need to deal with the massive cannon in Castrum Abania. Destroy the cannon before it becomes operational and take control of the castle to force the Imperials out.

Castrum Abania is a pretty straightforward dungeon, but some of the mechanics here can be a bit confusing. You won't want to get caught off guard when making your way through this dungeon, so let's take a look at each boss in Castrum Abania, their attacks and mechanics, and how to beat them.

Updated May 27, 2023: Patch 6.4 updated a few mechanics in the Magna Roader and Inferno boss fights, and completely changed the Number XXIV fight (now known as Subject Number XXIV). We've taken this opportunity to refresh this guide with all this new info.

How To Unlock Castrum Abania

Castrum Abania is unlocked through the following quest.

  • Accept the Main Scenario Quest 'The Price of Freedom'
    • NPC Location: Alphinaud - The Peaks (X:26.6, Y:29.8)

Dungeon Walkthrough

This dungeon's layout is straightforward, just follow the path in front of you. Watch out for AoE attacks that the trash mobs will use as you advance through the dungeon. The first segment of this dungeon is pretty long, so be sure to have Sprint ready!

In the path between the first and second bosses, you will encounter Magitek Pods. These will start to activate when you approach them, preparing to release the subject inside. Try to destroy as many of the Pods as you can before they finish activating, and you won't have to deal with as many enemies.

Magna Roader

magna roader, first boss of castrum abania

The first boss of Castrum Abania is Magna Roader. Don't get road rage as you chase this boss around the room. Magna Roader's attacks and mechanics are listed below.

Attack Name

Type

Details

Wheel

Tankbuster

Deals high damage to the Tank. Use defensive cooldowns as necessary.

Magitek Fire II

AoE

Targets a random player with an AoE circle. Move out of the indicator to avoid.

Magitek Fire III

AoE

Deals damage to all party members. The Healer should be prepared to recover the party's health.

Wild Speed

AoE/Special

Magna Roader will dash around the arena as indicated by its AoE telegraph. At the same time, 12th Legion Optio adds will spawn and begin firing the cannons on either side of the arena, targeting players with circle AoE attacks.

  • There are two ways to stop this attack. Either defeat the 12th Legion adds to take control of the cannon, then fire it at the Magna Roader, or wait for the Magna Roader to use Wild Speed four times, at which point it will stop and resume its normal attacks.

Magna Roader will repeat these mechanics until it is defeated. This fight is rather straightforward, but be sure to operate the cannons as soon as possible to stop the boss from dashing.

Subject Number XXIV

Number XXIV, second boss of castrum abania

The second boss of this dungeon is Subject Number XXIV. This magic wielding swordsman's attacks are listed below.

Attack Name

Type

Details

Elemental Overload

AoE/Special

The boss will deal damage to all party members before attuning to a random element. The boss will then use different attacks depending on which element it is attuned to.

  • The boss will use Discrete Magick, then Serial Magick while attuned to a specific element. After using Serial Magick, it will be overloaded; the boss will be stunned and immobile for a short duration, while taking more damage from attacks. After that, it will use Elemental Overload again.

Discrete Magick

Special

Lightning: Creates two pillars that explode with party-wide AoE damage, unless a player stands in one to absorb the AoE. Then, targets each player with a tracking line AoE. Spread out from each other to avoid overlapping this AoE while absorbing the pillar damage.

Fire: Creates three cone-shaped AoEs from the center of the arena. Then, targets a random player with a stack marker. Group up with the targeted player to spread out the damage of the stack AoE.

Ice: Creates a set of intersecting line AoEs in a criss-cross pattern, then targets players with AoE markers. Avoid the line AoEs and spread out from each other to avoid overlapping the AoE markers.

Serial Magick

Special

Lightning: Creates two sets of two pillars, then the tracking line AoE. Every player should spread out to ensure all four pillars have someone standing in them.

Fire: Creates two sets of three cone-shaped AoEs while targeting a player with a stack marker. Group together while dodging both sets of AoEs before the stack marker goes off.

Ice: Creates two sets of intersecting line AoEs before targeting players with AoE markers. Dodge the first and then second set of line AoEs while spreading out from other players.

After attuning to Lightning, Fire, and Ice once each, Subject Number XXIV will cycle back to whichever element it attuned to first. Lightning is the most dangerous attunement, as the pillars can deal lots of damage if you don't quickly deal with them.

Inferno

inferno, third boss of castrum abania

The final boss of Castrum Abania is Inferno, whose attacks and mechanics are detailed below.

Attack Name

Type

Details

Ketu Slash

Tankbuster

Deals high damage to the Tank. Use defensive cooldowns to mitigate this damage.

Rahu Blaster

AoE

Targets a random player with a line AoE. Move away from the front of the boss to avoid.

Ketu & Rahu

AoE

Inferno will move to the center of the arena and target two players with an AoE marker. One of these AoEs will target the ground underneath the player's feet, while the other will move with them for a short period of time. Both of these players should spread out from the rest of the group to avoid hitting them with these AoEs.

Roids

Special

Inferno will move to the back of the arena and take his medicine, empowering his attacks. Throughout the fight Inferno will repeatedly take more medicine at set intervals, further increasing the power of his attacks.

Empowered Ketu Slash

Tankbuster

Ketu Slash will deal more damage and inflict the Bleed debuff on the Tank. The Healer should be prepared to recover the Tank's health.

Empowered Ketu & Rahu

Proximity AoE

Creates a proximity marker and several AoEs that need to be dodged. Avoid the AoEs while moving away from the center of the proximity marker.

12th Legion Adds

Adds

12th Legion adds will spawn around the arena. The 12th Legion Death Claws will target two random players and begin to move toward them, stunning them if they reach their target. The 12th Legion Packer will move toward the medicine dispenser at the back of the arena and attempt to refill it. Destroy these enemies before they reach their destinations.

Inferno will repeat these attacks until it is defeated. Be sure to destroy the 12th Legion Packer to prevent Inferno's medicine from being refilled, and move carefully during Empowered Ketu & Rahu to avoid the number of AoEs that occur.
