I’m only a casual Final Fantasy 14 player, but even if I had more hours in the day to dedicate to my Warrior of Light, I still can’t imagine ever having enough time to complete all the content this game has to offer. I don’t just mean because FF14 receives regular patches and expansions, but all the grinding aspects too. Farming atmas nearly broke me, I don’t think I can handle anything else.

We all love to grumble about the grind, but not everyone shares that sentiment. There are plenty of players who love grinding content and many are willing to help others get their grind on too, such as Twitch Partner Zuan. She originally streamed World of Warcraft and Overwatch, but jumped into FF14 towards the end of the Heavensward arc and has since become a notable streamer in the community.

“Grinding in MMOs has always been a passion of mine,” Zuan tells me. “In World of Warcraft, I was a big mount/transmog farmer and wanted to collect all of the things. So my content does highly revolve around how to get this mount, this chest piece, this minion, and that achievement.

“A lot of my content is focused around doing content that is intended to last a whole expansion and completing it over consecutive streams. I do prefer to do grinds that can involve other players so they can also chip away at their own progress while I complete mine. If there isn’t a grind to be done, then I frequently ask my community what they need done and make that my mission.”

FF14 Zuan's Raiding team

Mount farming, FATE farming, minion farming, you name it, and Zuan has done it. Of course, part of the grind of aiming to get everything FF14 has to offer also involves tackling high-end content, so you’ll occasionally find Zuan streaming her Savage raids. However, her streams largely focus on helping others, with Zuan explaining “I love high-end content but I mostly love learning it so I can teach it to others in the community later.”

Raiding is often a daunting prospect for players, especially casuals like myself. We want to try it, we want the coveted goodies you get from doing it, but we also don’t want to absolutely suck at it and let our team down. So what’s the solution?

“My advice for someone interested in raiding is that as long as you are wanting to raid, willing to learn your class, and better yourself as a player in your role, you can do the raid,” Zuan says. “There are many content creators, just like myself, willing to answer questions who are masters at their role for players with questions and they can be amazing resources if you have questions on your class.

“There are also many reading resources such as The Balance discord, SaltedXIV, and AhkMorning that provide more insight to classes. Also, my biggest piece of advice: do not be afraid of Party Finder. There are usually plenty of learning groups with players who are in a similar position and want to try the raid. Soon you will make connections and might see a recruitment in Party Finder and join a static of your own.”

FF14 Zuan as Astrologian

Zuan tailors her streams towards newbies and encourages questions from her viewers so that she or someone else in the chat can help them out. She explains that she tends to keep high-end content off her stream as she prefers to be on-hand to answer questions that viewers might have, which would naturally be more difficult when having to focus on staying alive mid-raid. She also makes an effort to ensure that conversations are kept spoiler-free when new story content drops.

“I have been referred to as one of the ‘moms’ in the FF14 community, which I think is the best way to describe how my content might be viewed,” Zuan says. “My content is definitely where you can have a good laugh, get some random things done in the game with others, share how your day has been going, and also feel welcomed and protected. I really try my best to make sure everyone is having fun while respecting one another and that will always be my goal.

“I think the thing I love most about the community is that they generally want the same thing too. The FF14 community likes to laugh, help each other, create beautiful glam, and express themselves while also being conscious of each other. Clearly, the community can’t be perfect and I know that, but a majority of the community is just trying to have a good time in a game they love and I love that.”

FF14 Zuan and friends at the in game anime convention

Of course, everyone needs a break from the daily grind and there are times when Zuan mixes it up and hosts in-game events for a bit of fun. In the past, she’s held a community beach glamour competition and photoshoot, as well as an in-game anime convention with a cosplay competition. “The FF14 community is filled with players who want to help and play with others and I enjoy being one of them while also giving people a place to laugh and hang out during their workdays,” she says.

Like most of us, Zuan has been enjoying the recent Patch 6.1 content and explains that, like a kid tucked in bed at Christmas, she has trouble sleeping and is always awake when new content drops. She usually focuses on clearing the Main Scenario Quests so she can unlock the latest raid and group content first, that way she can enjoy the blind progression and figure out new mechanics with others.

“Patch 6.1 introduced a newfound love for FF14 PVP with the revamped PVP actions and Crystalline Conflict,” she tells me. “As someone who still plays Overwatch from time to time, I love this game mode. It’s fast and chaotic and a good time. The new extreme has been a lot of fun and this patch might be my introduction to Ultimate raiding. 6.1 has been a patch of ‘firsts’ for me, so I couldn’t ask for a better patch. It truly is a newfound adventure!”

FF14 Zuan's character

As an experienced WoW player, Zuan often finds that other WoW players will watch her FF14 streams and ask about comparisons between the two games. One thing that Zuan would love to see Square Enix take note of from WoW is its transmog system, which is similar to FF14’s glamour system. FF14 players often complain about the dresser storage for glamour gear, so Zuan hopes that one day this could be resolved by enabling players to create glamour plates based on a collection of everything our characters have equipped before, rather than having to manually store the items.

She’d also like to see an additional higher difficulty version of dungeons. “So much work goes into the dungeons and I love running them, but a week after they have been released the difficulty of them starts to feel trivial. I always imagine how boss mechanics or trash could be altered just a bit to add a little more difficulty for a player who desires a little more in their dungeon experience. It wouldn’t have to be for loot, maybe just an achievement or title. I think that would be fun and a good reuse of FF14’s beautiful dungeons.”
