If you were to ask the average gamer which Final Fantasy game is their favorite, unless they’re very cultured and have actually played a majority of games in the franchise, then odds are that they’ll answer with VII. For a lot of nerds, Final Fantasy VII was their main entryway into the Final Fantasy series, and there’s a lot of good reasons behind that.

At the time, its graphics were incredible in comparison to 16-bit games. Characters stood out as 3D models, and the game itself even had fully rendered cutscenes. And must I explain all the other groundbreaking it did? Final Fantasy VII was the first game of its kind. Sure, it might look like nothing now in comparison to all the HD or CGI video games we have today. But back in the late 90s, this was the game to have because of how unique everything was.

Since the game itself has been around for over 20 years, there’s been plenty of prequels and sequels for it. And of course, there’s the massive hype surrounding the upcoming remake. But for now, we’re going to focus on the plot of Final Fantasy VII and how it’s led to a lot of amazing and hilarious fans creating comics related to the game.

So of course, here’s your spoiler warning. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Besides, the game’s been out for 20 years. You’ve had time to play it. So either enjoy some hilarious comics or go play Final Fantasy VII. There is no other option.

25 Press The Button!

via Pinterest

So if you’ve played the game, you might be familiar with a somewhat annoying button synchronization toward the beginning. While in Midgar, Cloud, Tifa, and Barrett have to press buttons at the exact same time in order to gain access to the next area. However, the player is the one controlling Cloud, and it does take some observing to match your movements with Tifa’s and Barrett’s.

I can relate to this comic because I really struggled with this part of the game. It got very annoying the first couple of times I did this because I just could not match up with the other characters. This does make me wonder if this is an aspect Square Enix will keep in the upcoming remake.

24 Cute Hats

via: jammerlea.deviantart.com

First off, it’s rather creepy that Sephiroth and Aerith are friendly toward one another in this comic, considering what happens to her. And yet, it’s really cute to see Sephy in an adorable Moogle hat. We know he won’t admit it, but he likes it. Now what’s funny about Cloud is that his blond, spiky hair does remind one of a Chocobo.

But due to the Chocobo's appearance, the hat really does blend in with Cloud’s hairstyle.

Although let’s admit that Prompto’s hair looks more like a Chocobo's rear end in comparison, but we’re not talking about XV here. Poor Cloud. He just wants to impress Aerith. But go and impress Tifa. Maybe she can compliment you on your hat?

23 Aerith Lives DLC

via: respawncomic.com

So like I mentioned earlier, there are obviously going to be spoilers in this story. So if for some reason, you didn’t know that Aerith gets impaled by Sephiroth, well congratulations, there’s a spoiler for you. Anyway, when the game first released, Aerith’s demise shocked a lot of people because it was so surprising and unexpected. Out of the whole cast, you wouldn’t think that the sweetest woman and the last living Cetra on the planet would be annihilated. But she was.

This comic brings up the idea of what was to happen if Square Enix made “Aerith Lives DLC” for the game. Personally, I know I’d be a buyer for it and so would many of my friends, so I’d say the drowning in money part is accurate.

22 My, He's Changed

via: duellinganalogs.com

The Final Fantasy VII remake hasn't yet come to fruition, but it's supposedly been in the works for a long time now. It is finally available for preorder, so that means that it'll be on the horizon soon. And it's about time, since people have been waiting around for this for a very long time.

This comic shows the changes that could potentially be made to the remaster.

It's quite funny to see that, even in a remastered version, Cloud still looks a bit... boxy. Sure, characters looking like that were just a result of the available technology of the time. And truthfully, it's a bit nostalgic. But we wouldn't react like the characters pictured if Cloud still looks this boxy when the game actually comes out!

21 Pick Me, Please

via Up Up Down Down

Here we are with the Gold Saucer date. I know that during my first playthrough of the game I got Aerith, which I was okay with, but I would have preferred going on a date with Tifa. But considering what happens to her later on, I’m happy that I got to go on a date with Aerith.

Anyway, this comic shows Barrett polishing his weapon in preparation to potentially go on a date with Cloud. But much to Barrett’s dismay, Cloud ends up choosing Aerith as his date, leaving Tifa and Barrett to cry over this and rid themselves of their sorrows by eating ice cream. I still don’t understand how ice cream is a comfort food, but okay.

20 Cloud In A Dress? Yes.

via Dorkly

In the game, players get to see Cloud in a dress, and it’s truly a majestic sight to behold. Depending on what accessories you get for him, he could end up so beautiful that Don Corneo will choose him instead of Aerith and Tifa as his next plaything, if you will.

I’d honestly say this comic is pretty fitting for any fan.

Anyone of any gender can appreciate Cloud Strife with his long, luscious blond locks and cute purple dress. Aerith was the one who helped Cloud get the dress, so I’m really curious to know if this story was one the party members told around the campfire. I’m sure it was. Because, moody Cloud in a dress? Yes.

19 I Wore A Dress, And I Liked It

via Pinterest

Continuing off of Cloud in a dress, this is definitely one of my favorite comics because of the concept it brings up. What if you had the ability to keep Cloud in the dress the whole time?

If Square Enix doesn’t make this an option in-game, I will be kind of disappointed.

I mean, think about it. Maybe he just liked dresses so much because of how freeing they are. There are no restrictive pants involved. And I’m sure it allows for a rather nice breeze down there. What am I curious to know about is why he chose to continue wearing the makeup as well. He could be experimenting. Or he could just like the feel of everything. Regardless, I do want dress DLC to be included in the remake.

18 Vincent The Vampire

via: galvatronzero.deviantart.com

So, like Yuffie, Vincent Valentine is an optional party member. And if you’re not too familiar with his tragic backstory, check out Dirge of Cerberus. But for those not aware, Vincent is a former Turk that fell in love with Lucrecia Crescent, Sephiroth’s mother. Of course, things ended up not working out, Sephiroth became evil and Vincent became a science experiment that slept in a coffin for a very long time.

That’s how Cloud discovers him. So at first, you might actually think that he is a vampire. This comic cracks me up because it plays around with the idea of Vincent actually being a bloodsucker. But please. Don’t harm Vincent. He did absolutely nothing wrong.

17 Cute In One Pic

via Fanpop

This isn’t necessarily a comic, but it’s a cute fan art that I really wanted to share. In Advent Children, Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo, are connected to Sephiroth and are looking for Jenova. And as we all know, Cloud spends a lot of time in the movie brooding over letting Aerith perish and feeling like he’s weak due to geostigma.

It’s pretty hilarious to see the silver-haired trio portrayed like this because they’re actually very aggressive in the whole film. The fan art itself does a good job of showing the characters’ personalities through minimal text, which is something I enjoy. After all, Kadaj just wants to be with “mother.” And poor Cloud just wants to brood. The cast is definitely not this light-hearted and carefree in the darker animated film.

16 I Am Your Father… Oh, Wait.

via: executorharuto.deviantart.com

I’m sure you’re familiar with both Final Fantasy VII and Star Wars if you consider yourself a nerd. This is a flashback to Nibelheim when Sephiroth loses his mind and goes crazy, destroying the entire town and eliminating civilians.

Cloud’s mother ends up destroyed and Tifa’s father perishes at the hands of Sephiroth.

Tifa does pick up Sephiroth’s Masamune and threatens to end him, angry at the loss of her father. But this comic is funny because Sephy quotes Darth Vader and says that he is Tifa’s father, leaving Tifa very confused. But think about it. How weird would it be if Sephiroth was actually Tifa’s father? That would be on a whole other level of weird.

15 The Comic Relief

via DeviantArt (KeyshaKitty)

Reno and Rude both work for Shinra and actually take their jobs very seriously in Final Fantasy VII. However, in Advent Children, the writers apparently thought the pair would be perfect for the comic relief the film desperately needed. There’s one point in the movie where Reno accidentally steps on a pair of Rude’s sunglasses, causing them to break.

This comic pokes fun at that because Rude just so happened to have a second pair of sunglasses on hand in the movie. I wonder why Rude decides to wear sunglasses. Does he think it makes him cooler? Does he not want people to see what his eyes really look like? It’s truly a mystery. We actually appreciate the comedic element these two brought to the film.

14 Old Man Yells At Cloud

via Dorkly

I’d say that we’re all pretty familiar with this meme from The Simpsons. “Old Man Yells At Cloud” is a post that you’ll see every so often on Facebook. But instead, here we have him yelling at Cloud. And honestly, Cloud might deserve it just a little.

He’s very moody in Advent Children. Sure, he laments losing Aerith. But he also feels bad about the Zack situation. After remembering everything his best friend did for him, he thinks that he’s basically disappointed him and tarnished his legacy. Obviously, that’s far from the case, since even in passing, Zack and Aerith still value Cloud as a very close friend. So go ahead. Lecture the man and knock some sense into him.

13 Oh No, Not The Spikes

via Creative Uncut

Let’s be real here. Square Enix is known for giving male characters the wackiest of hairstyles. It really makes you wonder how they come up with these gravity-defying ideas, let alone how cosplayers manage to actually style wigs like this. Cloud Strife’s hair is definitely one of the crazier styles in the Final Fantasy franchise.

But in this comic, the artist throws this idea out into the world: What if Cloud was born with it? Maybe it’s Maybelline? More like if this were the case, I feel truly sorry for Cloud’s mother. How anyone could survive such terror is astonishing. I know this is supposed to be a joke, but imagining this is frightening me. Just imagine how intense his hair is going to look in the remake.

12 The Epic Slap Fight

via: neotokyo9.deviantart.com

I’ll admit, this is a scene that I’m pretty sure we can all relate to. It's no secret that the team in Final Fantasy VII is something of a ragtag group. This can be seen not only in their mannerisms and backstories but even just by looking at them. The characters shown in this comic include a vampire, a man with a metal arm, and a creature. It's pretty crazy!

The way that this comic was drawn is also really cute. It's rare that we see hand-drawn comics anymore, and this one just happened to knock it out of the park. These are just not the kind of guys we'd want to play rock, paper, scissors with, that's for sure!

11 This Guy Are Sick

via: escapistmagazine.com

So if you frequently played video games in the 90s, I’m sure you’re well aware that there were a lot of errors and bugs in almost any game that came out. Nothing can truly be perfect. However, some mistakes, even grammatical ones, can truly add to the experience. One of Aerith’s most well-know mistranslated lines comes from a scene where Aerith and Cloud approach a sickly male and she states, “This guy are sick.”

This comic discusses the idea of keeping the goofy mistakes but seeing them in the fancy CG graphics. I don’t really know about seeing Aerith like this, but I’d be just fine with Aerith actually saying the line. Actually, I'd be okay with it. This looks pretty awesome.

10 Everyone Wants Spiky Boy

via Whitewright Manga Book Club

I know I’ve been sharing a lot of Gold Saucer related comics, but it’s hard not to when they’re all so funny. Especially when in the majority of them, Barrett’s holding flowers. It’s so perfect. And in this comic, every dateable option, including optional party member Yuffie, is doing their best to win Cloud’s affections.

Once again, this is where I mention that I’ll always be a huge Cloud and Tifa fan. And yet, to this day I still haven’t watched footage of how the Cloud x Barrett date goes. I’m assuming it either goes very well or extremely bad. And we all know Zack is the best option for Aerith. Don’t forget that. It would be fun to see Yuffie and Tifa fight over cloud.

9 The Movie Continues

via: pinterest.com

Since Square Enix can’t leave its precious child alone, Advent Children basically got its own remake, dubbed Advent Children Complete. It was a Blu-Ray movie that was Advent Children but significantly better. There were more scenes that added significantly to the plot. There was more of Zack and his beautiful face.

And of course, the animators actually showed dirt and blood on the characters, making it much more realistic. This comic pokes fun at that because this would be something Zack would do. He was so protective of Cloud. Sure, he might not be this extreme about it, but you get the idea. But in other news, anyone wish that Advent Children was a game? Or is it just me?

8 Because It Matters

via: duelinganalogs.com

I don’t think I’ve made a remark about Tifa’s chest yet. Thank goodness. Unfortunately, to some people, that’s all Tifa is known for, even though she is such a strong and well-rounded character. This comic pokes fun at Aerith’s passing but discusses how Cloud shouldn’t be discouraged since Tifa is still alive.

But to make matters worse, Red XIII asks if he can have Aerith’s body. I know this is supposed to be a joke, but as an Aerith cosplayer, this hurt me. She doesn’t deserve to just be torn apart at the jaws of Red XIII. These girls are important too, you baka, or whatever. Don’t forget that. Aerith deserves way more than anyone who would treat her that way.

7 A Broken Heart

via Pinterest

And once again, here we are discussing the Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith love triangle. A fan made a cover for a fictional comic book, making it out like Tifa is heartbroken over Cloud and Aerith being together.

Sure, Tifa would probably be brokenhearted since I feel like she had a crush on her best friend from the start.

But I don’t really see Tifa being that person who would hide behind the bushes and cry as she watches Cloud fall in love with somebody else. However, I think it’s also ironic that Tifa says that Aerith will probably never understand the stabbing feeling she has in her heart. Well, she might, but not in the way you might be thinking, Tifa.

6 Microtransactions And DLC

via Comic Strips by Dave the Direman

As of now, the Final Fantasy VII remake is planned to be a three-disc game because of how much content the game itself is going to have. Because of that, fans are wondering if it will be anything like Final Fantasy XV, which is continuing to release extra content for the game this year and in 2019.

This comic throws around the idea of the types of DLC and microtransactions the game could possibly have. One of these is, of course, the ability to revive Aerith, which I honestly don’t see a point in. As much as I love Aerith, her demise is actually a major part of the story and it would change the plot dramatically if she lived.
