The release of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake has sparked a renewed interest in the original game. The Materia system in Final Fantasy 7 is still one of the most loved equipment customization and magic systems in the entire series. It's as flexible as it is complex for those willing to experiment.

Most players will be content with linking the All Materia to Magic and mastering the Summon Materia like Bahamut, and, of course, The Knights of the Round. However, there is so much more to the system than simply mastering individual spells. Let’s take a look at some of the most powerful and destructive Materia combinations in FF7, that if mastered could make even the Ruby and Emerald Weapon super bosses a walk in the park.

Updated January 6, 2022, by Stephen Morin: While players are waiting for the next installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, it's a perfect time to go back and replay the original or experience it for the first time. Many players adore the materia system, which adds a ton of customization to character stats and combat mechanics. Despite this game being a classic, many people are unaware of some of the FF7 best materia combos in the game and just how far some players take grinding for AP and experimenting with materia. Here's what you need to know.

20 Restore/AllAcquiring restore materia in FF7

It's easy to get excited for materia combos in the late game; however, a lot of players seek out great combos in the early game, especially those who are new to the genre. One of the best combinations is to mix the Restore materia with All. This allows you to restore HP to all party members.

This combination might seem elementary to seasoned veterans, but in the early game, both spells and materia spots are limited, making this an optimal choice for surviving the harder boss fights.

19 4X Cut/Counter

Vincent Barret and Cloud in combat FF7

The 4X Cut materia is challenging to acquire since it involves grinding for AP and leveling up 2X Cut. Those who are patient enough to grind it out will be rewarded with a materia that allows them to attack four times. While this is useful enough alone - as it replaces the attack command - it can also be paired with the Counter materia.

4X Cut and Counter will allow the player to counter-attack four times in a row. The main benefit in pairing it with Counter is that it frees up the equipped character's action and allows them to do other things while retaining the ability to strike an enemy four times.

18 Death Blow/Added Cut

Cloud casting deathblow FF7

Added Cut is one of the most vital pieces of materia in the game. Combining it with another materia adds a free attack after the initial materia is used. One powerful choice is to combine it with Death Blow, which will guarantee a hit, even if the critical from Death Blow misses.

This might not compete with more powerful spells in the end game, but it allows players to freely use Death Blow without wasting a turn. The best-case scenario is the player lands two critical hits in a row, which can trounce most enemies and even bosses in the first half of the game.

17 Added Effect/Contain

Using Contain Materia FF7

It is debatable whether or not the Added Effect materia and Contain are better or worse than Hades and Contain. It's true that Hades hits foes with more status effects, but Added Effect inflicts Confuse, Stop, and Petrify, which are three of the most powerful status effects in the game. Hades does not hit the enemies with Petrify or Stop. Furthermore, Hades can be used to buff your armor, making you immune to status effects.

All in all, Added Effect is arguably better for offense and putting a stop to a tough for. Then you can use Hades to avoid getting hit with obnoxious status effects. Win-win.

16 Choco/Mog And Added-Effect

The Choco/Mog is the first Summon materia players will receive in Final Fantasy 7 and it may be one of the most underrated spells in the game. It has many great materia combinations but pairing it with the Added-Effect materia may be the most useful.

This pairing, when attached to a weapon, gives players a good chance of hitting the Stop Spell if the materias are sufficiently leveled. The Choco/Mog grants you the Stop Spell long before obtaining the Time materia which is available much later.

15 Master Magic Materia/All Materia

The Master Magic materia is easily one of the most useful spells that can be equipped. It can be obtained by taking any fully leveled/mastered materia to the Huge Materia at Cosmo Canyon and combining them. The player loses traded in mastered materia but they will gain the Master Magic materia which gives access to all 21 magic spells in the game.

It can also be obtained by trading the Earth Harp with the Kalm traveler in Kalm after defeating the Emerald Weapon. It’s a fantastic materia on its own but combined with the Mega All materia every magic spell will be capable of hitting all enemies at once on the battlefield.

14 Hades/Added Effect

The Hades materia is one of the coolest and most sinister-looking summon spells in Final Fantasy 7. It’s a non-elemental magic spell that has a 100 percent chance of inflicting Poison, Sleep, Frog, Slow, Mini, Silence, and even Paralyse on enemies.

It’s already an effective summon on its own without any enhancements but when combined with the Added Effect materia in a weapon it becomes one of the best material combos in FF7. It’s also very useful against many of the stronger non-boss enemies encountered on the field and a great way to grind for experience.

13 Magic Counter/Restore

The Magic Counter materia is one of the most effective and useful go-to support materias in Final Fantasy 7. It can be obtained as a prize after winning the Chocobo racing S Class or the Northern Cave later in the game.

Getting the Magic Counter materia up to level four will increase its effectiveness to 100 percent and combining it with the Restore materia will mean that every time the player is hit the characters will automatically heal themselves.

12 Sneak Attack/Slash-All

The Sneak Attack materia is a Support spell that allows the player’s characters to catch their enemies by surprise with the first attack. It’s a great way to get a drop on difficult enemies in the field and can make the many random battles in the game a much less tedious affair.

Combine the Sneak Attack materia with the Slash-All materia and you can end the battle in one hit. The Slash-All materia can be found in the Ancient Forest when leveled up the character it is equipped to will attempt Flash which is capable of hitting enemies with Instant Death.

11 Sneak Attack/Ultima

Final Fantasy 7 casting ultima

For those who prefer to start each battle with a spell instead of an attack, combining Sneak Attack with Ultima allows you to cast Ultima at the very start of the battle. This comes with the advantage of hitting all foes and makes for one of the best material combos in FF7.

Giving Ultima to a character focusing on magic also comes with significant stat boosts like plus ten percent MP and a magic stat increase. A potent magic-user will be able to wipe out most enemies before the battle even begins with this matera combo.

10 Make All Attack Magic More Powerful By Percent

Acquiring MP Turbo Materia FF7

MP Turbo is a magic-boosting support materia that will increase the power of magic attacks by draining more magic points (MP). The incredibly useful item can found at the Whirlwind Maze so there's only one opportunity to get it as the story progresses.

A fully mastered MP Turbo materia will inflict 50 percent more damage to enemies when it is linked with magic and summon materia. If one attaches an MP Absorb materia then the player's MP will be reduced by half.

9 Knights of The Round Plus Healing

Knights of the Round summon

The HP Absorb materia can be found in Wutai Village where Yuffie is encountered. It’s a support materia that can be linked to offensive spells like magic attacks and summons. The caster will get their health restored to around ten percent of the damage dealt.

So when combined with Knights of The Round and MP Turbo, more damage can be dealt as well as regaining significant amounts of HP with every slash from a Knight. This FF7 material combo will come in very handy with high-level bosses that can inflict a lot of damage.

8 Bahamut Zero X4 Summon Attack

summoning Bahmut FF7

The Quadra Magic is a support-based materia that needs to be linked/combined with casting spells so they can be used four times in succession. Unfortunately, the biggest drawback of using Quadra is that with every successive attack the damage is cut in half unless the MP Turbo materia is equipped.

The Quadra can't be combined with the Knights of the Round, but it can be combined with Bahamut Zero, the dragon's most powerful form and arguably the second most powerful summon in the game.

7 Knights of The Round X2 Summon Attack

Ultimate End FF7 Cloud

The Knights of The Round summon is the most powerful attack spell in Final Fantasy 7. The materia can be obtained by either breeding a Gold Chocobo to reach the hidden island or as a reward from the Kalm Traveller after defeating the Emerald Weapon.

The summon spell is capable of destroying most enemies with a single casting. However, if combined with the W-Summon and Mime support materias then players will be capable of casting the spell twice in a row.

6 Final Attack And Phoenix Revive X4

Summoing Phoenix in FF7

The Final Attack support materia that can be obtained from the Battle Square in the Gold Saucer theme park by winning the special battle. It can be linked to all magic and summon materia and will use the selected materia’s ability as a death counter.

A very useful combination is linking the Final Attack with the Phoenix summon which not only restores downed party members but casts the Phoenix Flame. Furthermore, attaching Quadra and a mastered Phoenix summon, will result in four flame attacks.

5 Ultima/Quadra/Final Attack

Final Attack materia FF7

The powerful Ultima materia can be given as a reward at the North Corel for successfully stopping the coal train when Cid temporarily takes the lead role. Alternatively, the materia can be purchased for 50,000 Gil from the same villager.

Ultima at mastered level becomes even more powerful when combined with Quadra and Final Attack. It can work as both as a devastating counter for knocked-out party members and as offensive magic. The Ultima automatically targets all enemies and combined with Quadra hits four times. It's also worth adding an MP Turbo for extra damage.

4 Level 2 Comet/Quadra Magic

Acquiring Qudra Magic Materia

The Comet Materia which can be found in Forgotten City above the Fish Room is non-elemental attack magic that, at a base level, does five times the damage of normal magic attacks. In addition, a level two Comet Materia will automatically hit all enemies four times in a row.

Comet will become even more devastating when combined with Quadra Magic. This devastating link-up will hit enemies a total of sixteen times. If players attach an MP Absorb too this will cut down MP loss significantly.

3 Level 2 Double Cut X28

Cait Sith 2X Cut FF7

The Double Cut Materia is a command-type magic power that grants the characters with the ability to hit enemies twice in one turn. At level two it upgrades to the 4X-Cut and depending on how powerful the character is they can deal a ton of damage in one turn – potentially 9999 damage at maximum level.

If players combine this with seven sets of mastered Mime materia linked to the mastered Counter Materia one potentially hit the enemy 28 times in a row for close to 280,000 damage points.

2 Knights Of The Round X7

Knights of the Round summon animation

Knights of The Round is the most destructive Summon Materia in Final Fantasy 7. It’s a long animation that displays 13 knights individually dealing lots of damage to the enemies. However, enduring the lengthy animation is worthwhile as it can be cast the spell seven times in one turn.

To accomplish this, players need to attach seven Magic Counter materias with six Mime materias, and the HP ↔ MP materia. If the materia has been mastered then it is possible to do over 900,000 damage points in one single turn.

1 Omnislash For A Million Damage Points

Cloud using Omnislash FF7

Omnislash is Cloud’s most powerful Limit Break and thanks to a discovery by the YouTuber 4-8Productions it can be combined with materia for the most powerful attack in the game. Combining eight sets of mastered Mime materia linked to eight sets of mastered Counter materia players can deal over a million damage points in one turn if Cloud is fighting with maximum stats.

Gamers just need to hit their opponent with one Omnislash then allow them to hit retaliate in order for Cloud counter with eight rounds of Omnislash for a million damage hit points. That’s enough to defeat all the WEAPONS and bosses in the game in one single turn.
