Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's producer, Yoshinori Kitase, says that he hopes to be able to provide an update on the 2023 game "when the timing is right".
Considering the lengthy development time of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the fact that we already have Final Fantasy 16 releasing in 2023, most fans of the series probably didn't expect to see the second part of the Remake trilogy in the same year. Surprisingly, however, that's exactly what Square Enix announced during the Final Fantasy 7 25th anniversary stream earlier this year.
Since that announcement, Square Enix has been pretty quiet about Rebirth, instead choosing to focus on promoting Final Fantasy 16. It seems that we'll be getting an update soon, however, as noted by the game's producer Yoshinori Kitase in the latest issue of Famitsu, which features Japanese developers revealing some of their ambitions for 2023.
According to Gematsu's translations, Kitase said, "As the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII continues to stir up the excitement with its seven campaigns, I hope to be able to deliver an update on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth when the timing is right. Please look forward to it!”
Although most of the messages from developers in the article are vague promises of more information to come soon, it's a little more interesting on Rebirth's end considering it's currently planned for 2023. Let's hope that the update isn't pushing it out of that time zone. Still, it's not like fans of the series won't be eating well.
Aside from what's been hinted at in interviews since the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, we don't know all that much concrete about Rebirth currently. Certain phrasing that's been used in interviews seems to suggest that it'll feature an open world of some kind, but that's still not been outright confirmed just yet.
The most concrete thing we know so far is that fan-favourite hero Zack Fair will play an "active" role in the game, which came to light in a recent interview with his Japanese voice actor following the release of Crisis Core Reunion.
