Final Fantasy 7 Remake is finally out on PC, provided you're okay with getting it on the Epic Games Store and paying $70 for the privilege. However, you might want to keep your credit card in your wallet for this one. According to some initial hardware analysis, Final Fantasy 7 Remake isn't particularly optimized for PC.

Digital Foundry's Alex Battaglia was able to perform some brief analysis before heading off for the holiday break and his initial findings weren't promising. Battaglia tweeted a number of problems with FF7 Remake, including in-game stutters, lost frames when spinning the camera, and a game that's reporting 60fps "when it sure as hell is not."

Alex then sent his clips over to a colleague for verification, who confirmed Battaglia's specs and "yeah, the PC port of FFVIIR is terrible." Battaglia ran the game on an Intel i9 10900K and an Nvidia RTX 3090 at just 1080p and still reported frames dipping below 60fps frequently.

These tweets eventually got picked up by ResetEra and Alex showed up with this summarizing comment: "This is literally the worst AAA release I have seen on PC in a good long time. I humbly submit that no one should buy it." Not exactly a great look for a publisher that recently started charging $70 for its PC games.

However, I hasten to point out that our own Jade King also played Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PC with far humbler hardware and was able to maintain a solid 100fps at 1440p and max graphics settings. She played on an AMD Ryzen 5 1500X CPU and an Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti with just 16GB of RAM. That's way less than what Digital Foundry played FF7R with, so perhaps Square Enix optimized their game for older hardware rather than the bleeding edge of PC tech.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available now on PC via the Epic Games Store.
