Final Fantasy VII is, without a doubt, one of the biggest and most renowned titles in video gaming history. One can very much argue that the PlayStation wouldn't have become the hub of quality JRPGs as its rightfully know in today's day-and-age had it not been for the massive impact that Final Fantasy VII had on the entire landscape of gaming as a whole. Games like Vagrant Story, Xenogears, and Chrono Cross — among other such landmark titles — would've never seen the light of day had it not been for the unprecedented success of this Squaresoft title.

One of the many reasons why Final Fantasy VII broke into the mainstream and became one of the most successful video games of all time was its colorful cast of characters. Cloud, Barret, Tifa, Aerith — there's no shortage of the immensely memorable characters present in the game. Now, with the remake right around the corner, fans are waiting with bated breath to see how Square Enix will modernize the formula.

However, the sheer number of characters in this game is nothing short of immense, and it's pretty much obvious that there have to be some underrated gems that have gone under the radar of Final Fantasy fans all over the world. So, it's time to give ten such people from the game the justice they deserve and show them such much-needed appreciation.

10 Rufus Shinra

It's understandable if you might assume that Rufus Shinra was nothing more than a placeholder run-of-the-mill corporate villain whose role was just to impede the party as much as possible.

However, people who've seen Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children can very much argue otherwise. Affected by Geostigma, Rufus undergoes some excellent character development and actually redeems himself in the eyes of the audience near the end of the series.

The fact that he's hella cool certainly helps things too.

9 Yuffie Kisaragi

It's honestly quite surprising that most people who've played Final Fantasy VII aren't exactly huge fans of Yuffie. One simply can't understand why this is the case — after all, the fact of the matter is that she's one of the best party members one can have in their party.

While the manner in which she steals all the party's Materia is annoying, the memorable trek through Wutai more than makes up for this inconvenience. It ends in an excellent fight that grants the player with their first — and only — water-elemental summon.

The fact that her final Limit Break is incredibly damaging is quite useful as well.

8 Cid Highwind

Speaking of people with incredible Limit Breaks, how can we not mention the man whose final Limit Break involves him bringing down an entire freaking airship on top of his enemies? Yep, we're talking about Cid Highwind himself.

Most people tend to give this character a wide berth since he's the last permanent member of your party. The fact that he's a rumored wife-harmer doesn't really help his situation either.

However, his utility is second to none, making him an excellent addition to your party.

7 Rude

The group known as the Turks serves as a fun little distraction in Final Fantasy VII. However, most of them aren't really memorable and fade into obscurity in the latter half of the game.

However, Rude is actually quite a fun member of the Turks mainly because of his unhealthy infatuation with Tifa. In fact, if you fight Rude at any point in the game while Tifa is in your party, you'll notice that Rude will never attack Tifa at all.

Aw, so sweet of him.

6 Reeve Tuesti

One of the members of the ShinRa board, it must be said that Reeve is perhaps the only person in the group who actually has a conscience. For starters, he's the only person who thinks that bringing down an entire Sector plate on innocents to capture a few terrorists is extreme (which should be fairly obvious in hindsight).

He also reprograms Cait Sith so that he switches roles and starts spying on ShinRa for Cloud and his team.

Honestly, it's a shame that Reeve isn't recognized for his actions.

5 Palmer

Speaking of executives in the ShinRa board, it's time to talk about the very definition of incompetency himself. Palmer is so stupid that his appearance on the screen is always accompanied by unintentional bouts of hilarity.

Unfortunately, the sad part is that Palmer is never given enough screen time. In fact, there's no closure given for his character, with him yet to make an appearance in any game in the series.

Oh well, there's the remake if nothing else.

4 Scarlet

We round off the hat-trick of mentioning the ShinRa executives with Scarlet, a woman who has her most entertaining moment in a slap fest with Tifa that is genuinely a very engrossing minigame — and no, we're not kidding when we say that.

She's also been directly involved in a lot of the game's pivotal moments. For starters, her vile actions in Corel resulted in the destruction of the town and both Barret and Dyne losing an arm each.

Thankfully, she gets her just desserts when the Proud Clod — one of her creations — explodes and engulfs her in the blast.

3 Elmyra Gainsborough

The adoptive mother of Aerith doesn't get a lot of screen time, but one needs to applaud her efforts in raising an Ancient child and doing so with flourishing results.

It's said that children take after the qualities of their parents. If that's the case, then Elmyra must've done something really good to ensure that Aerith grew up into a fine young girl.

The pain she must've felt after realizing that her daughter had passed away must've been unimaginable.

2 Marlene Wallace

It's pretty evident that the daughter of Barret would certainly not be a pushover in any sense of the world, and Marlene Wallace shows just how much of a badass she can actually be if given the chance.

The mere fact that Tifa and Barret were more than open to let Marlene take care of The 7th Heaven — a rowdy pub in the slums of Sector 7 — all by herself makes it all the more obvious as to just how responsible she is at such a young age.

1 Priscilla

The kid you resuscitate in Junon turns out to be an incredibly useful resource for Cloud and Co. We say this because Priscilla allows the party to infiltrate the ShinRa ship and allows them to move forward with their journey in the first place.

If that wasn't awesome enough as is, meeting up with this girl after a major chunk of the events are done provides you with the iconic Shiva Materia as well!
