If there’s one thing the Final Fantasy series has come to be known for other than belts and big swords, it’s colorful characters. Seifer Almasy is the titular rival of Final Fantasy VIII as he stands in direct opposition of protagonist and village MCR era emo kid Squall Leonhart. Final Fantasy VIII's primary themes are love and the succession of witches.

Both powerful, fleeting, and usually hidden forces of nature. In the game's opening theme, “Liberi Fatali,” the motif Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec is not real Latin. It is, instead, an anagram of the words and themes love and the succession of witches. Much like love and witches, that phrase fact was hidden in plain sight just as several other allusions in the game are poetically waiting to be discovered.

We’ve done the heavy lifting for you though, so read on to discover 10 hidden facts about Disciplinary Committee founder and leader, Seifer Almasy.

10 He’s Not The Oldest

Despite Seifer's commanding attitude and seeming seniority, Quistis is actually the oldest of the orphans. Maybe that’s why he defies her so readily every chance he gets. He also might just be a royal jerk. Yeah. It’s probably that one.

Despite his bullying, he does see the value and strength of his friends. In his own way, he acknowledges their talent and dedication, but he really should just try saying “good job.”

9 He’s A Capricorn

Honestly, if you’re really into star charts, then he’s a SagiCorn, born on the cusp of Sagittarius and Capricorn since his birthday is December 22. That makes a lot of his personality traits make way more sense, honestly.

The fiery attitude, the wanderlust, the pride, and most certainly the inability to accept a loss. Despite being a winter baby, Seifer is surprisingly warm and personable to those he likes. The rest should probably just stay out of his way.

8 His Scar Is Opposite Squall’s

During the epic introduction video for the game, as “Liberi Fatali” comes to its crescendo, Seifer slashes Squall between the eyes. This leaves a scar that runs from the top right to the bottom left of his face. It's honestly a cheap shot, especially to pull in a practice session.

Sometime later in the game, Squall returns the favor, except Seifer’s scar runs from the top left to the bottom right. If they pressed their foreheads together, their scars would make an “X," which is a hilarious, if not grim, image to imagine.

7 His Limit Break Is “Fire Cross”

For the small amount of time that you control Seifer in-game, if you trigger his Limit Break, you can see that the overall name of his Limit Breaks is “Fire Cross” in the same way that Squall’s is “Renzokuken,” Zell’s is “Duel,” and etc.

While the player can only use one of his Limit Break abilities, “No Mercy,” when they control the character, as you progress the game, Seifer has no problem unleashing an additional 3 Limit Break abilities on his opponents: Demon Slice, Bloodfest, and Zantetsuken Reverse.

6 His Weapon Is Hyperion

Hyperion is the only gunblade that Seifer uses throughout the game, and it’s quite different from any of Squall’s models.

For starters, Seifer’s gunblade is fitted with an automatic pistol for the handle versus a revolver type like Squall’s. The blade itself is also unique to his weapon, though it seems unknown whether his blade is an official model or a custom affair.

5 His Triple Triad Card Is A Reflection

In the minigame, Triple Triad, Seifer and Squall’s cards are mirrors of each other in terms of their value and strength. Going clockwise starting from the top number, Seifer’s values are 6, 9, A, and 4 whereas Squalls are A, 4, 6, and 9.

The two cards also refine into different items. Squall’s card refines into Three Stars which teach a character ability whereas Seifer’s refines into Diamond Armor which teaches a Guardian Force ability.

4 His Attack and Victory Pose Is…Yup Opposite

It’s not necessarily a mirror, but it is the exact opposite. Squall’s basic attack is an overhead, diagonal strike from high to low, but Seifer’s is a backhand, diagonal strike from low to high.

Upon victory, Squall crosses himself with his sword first from the right, then the left before turning his back thereby effectively removing his opponent from his sight and his mind. Seifer crosses himself exclusively from his right side and never turns his back on his opponent almost like a knight saluting a downed opponent.

These are reflections of their character sure, but it also speaks a bit to their ideology on battle and respect for their enemies.

3 He Can Reverse Zantestuken

What was previously thought to be the unstoppably swift flash of steel known for cleaving foes in twain, quickly becomes more like the sword of Damocles when Odin attempts to use the Zantetsuken technique on Seifer at Lunatic Pandora.

Surely aware of his power and ready to take him on, Seifer uses a secret technique called Zantetsuken Gaeshi to slice Odin in half sending his own technique right back at him. You have to respect such a flex honestly.

2 The Cross Motif

Crosses are a repeated motif in Final Fantasy VIII if you really pay attention, but Seifer’s cross is very particular. Seifer’s is a variation of the Cruz de Santiago or Cross of Saint James, a symbol worn by knights belonging to the Order of St. James of the Sword.

Given the order’s renowned status throughout history, perhaps Seifer’s character was given this particular motif as his ideals parallel those one would assume a knight in the order would also have: faith, romance, and selflessness.

1 He’s Extraordinarily Romantic

Seifer is more than strength and good looks, given his almost poetic demeanor and lofty dreams, he’s practically torn right from the pages of a Romantic play or painting. This romance isn’t one of the lovey-dovey kind, but rather the artistic ideology and philosophical movement that came about during the Age of Enlightenment.

These Romantics emphasized emotional self-awareness as a mandatory aspect of society if humankind wished to improve. They also thought highly of nature and all things in it. Seifer was always aware of his emotional state even if he kept it private and his obsession with being the sorceress’s knight aligned with respect for nature as witches are often thought to be nature incarnate.
