Sales numbers for video games are never easy to narrow down. Even though this article has hard numbers to report on, based VG Sales backed by press releases from publishers, there is still a lot of mystery. For instance, many companies simply don’t like to share digital sales for whatever reason.

That said, even though these numbers might be off, it can be assumed they are close enough to start a discussion point. This article went through every Final Fantasy game in the series before narrowing the list down to ten entries. What are the all time highs and what titles barely got off the ground?

10 Best: Final Fantasy VIII (9.65M)

This number should not be that surprising even though Final Fantasy VIII is considered a black sheep in the family. Between the PS1 release, the recent remaster, and everything in-between, the game sold 9.65 million units. This could be because it directly followed Final Fantasy VII, which was a smash hit. Naturally whether the game was good or not, strong sales were going to follow.

9 Worst: Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes Of Light (191,000)

The 4 Heroes of Light felt like a reboot at the time. This game, only released on DS, sold about 191,000 units.

The name should have boosted sales but as there was a subtitle, that may have been counteractive to the idea. While it reviewed decently, one thing that may have held it back even further was the extreme difficulty.

8 Best: Final Fantasy X (9.75M)

Not including its direct sequel, Final Fantasy X has gone on to to sell over 9.75 million copies. That includes the initial release on PS2 along with all of the HD copies. As the first of the series on PS2 which boasted new graphics and full voices, it was thought to be the next big leap up from Final Fantasy VII. There is a very good reason why it got a sequel.

7 Worst: Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy In Itadaki Street Portable (154,000)

This crossover title for the PSP only sold about 154,000 units. For those unaware, this Japanese exclusive is similar to Mario Party or Monopoly. Pick a character from Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy, go around the board, buy a property, and get as much cash as possible to win. This and the main Itadaki Street games are actually pretty good.

6 Best: Final Fantasy VI (10.17M)

Between all of the solid copies sold of Final Fantasy VI, which includes the Super Nintendo, PS1, and Game Boy Advance versions, this game has sold approximately 10.17 million copies. While it is widely regarded as one of the best in the series, the numbers are surprising because most retro titles of this era weren’t as widespread. It was harder to get word out.

5 Worst: Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (144,000)

Both entries in this rhythm based RPG did not sell as well as Square Enix might have wanted. Curtain Call did about 144,000 while the original sold around 162,000. For what they were, the sales weren’t bad considering they were made for 3DS. As they are pretty basic games, it can be assumed that not as much time went into making them.

4 Best: Final Fantasy XIV (10.9M)

This second online entry in the series has gone on to sell about 10.9 million copies. That’s pretty good considering Final Fantasy XI had low numbers in the two millions area. There is a big reason why its sequel is doing much better and it is pretty obvious. Square Enix made it less obtuse and archaic. It was and still much easier to jump into. That is, after the reboot into A Realm Reborn.

3 Worst: Dissidia Final Fantasy NT (137,000)

This fighting spinoff for the franchise at first did pretty well. The first sold around 1.81 million units which was astounding for a PSP game. Its sequel, Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, sold around 470,000, which again wasn’t bad.

Now, the arcade version of this third entry apparently only sold about 137,000 units along with the console port on PS4. That combined total is honestly shocking. The game is now free to play.

2 Best: Final Fantasy VII (16.75M)

Is this really a surprise? Combining the total sales numbers of every port after the PS1, excluding the remake, Final Fantasy VII has sold over 16.75 million units. It is the king of the franchise and it will be interesting to see if any entry can ever topple it. Here’s hoping Final Fantasy XVI will give it a run for its money whenever that gets announced.

1 Worst: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (75,000)

The total sales for all five games in the Crystal Chronicles sub-series is around 2.64 million. This game has the weakest numbers, only selling around 75,000 units on Wii. One, the reviews were very mixed. Two, the game itself isn’t what fans wanted i.e. more multiplayer fun and not an action game aimed at solo players.
