Final Fantasy: 10 Quotes From The Games That Will Stick With Us Forever

Final Fantasy titles feature some of the greatest storytelling in video games, and these ten quotes from the series prove that point beautifully.

There are no buts about it: Final Fantasy is by far one of the most heart-wrenching, feels-filled RPG series in existence. With storylines capture both our attention and our hearts, as well as gameplay that always feels thoroughly ahead of its time, we were hopelessly in love with most of the characters we encountered. Some of the most endearing lines in video game history can be attributed to Square Enix's biggest success, and while there are truly too many to list in one article, we've compiled some of our favorites right here.

So grab a tissue and a pint of ice cream, and get ready to cry all over again over the lines that defined decades of RPG storytelling.

10 Kefka, Final Fantasy VI

"Why do you build, knowing destruction is inevitable? Why do you yearn to live, knowing all things must die? Knowing that none of it will have meant anything once you do? Life. Dreams. Hope. Where do they come from? Where do they go? Such meaningless things..."

Kefka is still acknowledged as one of the cruelest antagonists in any game, and for good reason. It's said that Ardyn was modeled with some of his cruelest traits and with a line such as this, it's easy to see why we were so thrilled to battle all of his final forms.

9 Yuna, Final Fantasy X

"My father... I loved him. So I... I will live with my sorrow, I will live my own life! I will defeat sorrow, in his place. I will stand my ground and be strong. I don't know when it will be, but someday... I will conquer it. And I will do it without... false hope."

Final Fantasy X, as a whole, was a tear-jerker. If you didn't get choked up at least once during this game series, then did you really play it? There will be those who blazed through without an ounce of emotion but for most of us, Yuna's speech had us shedding a tear or two.

8 Quina, Final Fantasy IX

"Why you care about small things? World very simple place. World only have two things: Things you can eat and things you no can eat."

Quina was a well-loved character in the ninth game of the series. With her many one-liners and an appetite that had us speechless most of the time, she quickly worked her way into our hearts. This line, while simple, still very much applies to real life. After all, it's true - you can either eat something, or you can't... so don't sweat the small stuff.

7 Squall, Final Fantasy VIII

"I'll be here. I'll be waiting for you. If you come here, you'll find me. I promise."

This line needs no explanation. What we will say is that Final Fantasy VIII, a true love story, resonated with many of us on a level we didn't even realize we had. The love between Squall and Rinoa was so pure and so strong, and it often reminded us of how precious and important life is.

6 Zidane, Final Fantasy IX

"Sometimes, you can't think everything out. You have to listen to your heart.' And, 'Heroic? Human? Those are just things people say after the fact... It's not what the people say afterward... What's important is being true to oneself."

Zidane, who started out as a bit of an immature, arrogant character in Final Fantasy IX, eventually became the worldy hero of the game. So much so, that we've included two of his lines here. While he was known for his brutal honesty, he was right most of the time: Honor yourself, and listen to your own heart above all else.

5 Vivi, Final Fantasy IX

"How you were a very special person to us, because you taught us all how important life is. You taught me that life doesn't last forever. That's why we have to help each other and live life to the fullest. Even if you say goodbye, you'll always be in our hearts. So, I know we're not alone anymore. Why I was born... How I wanted to live... Thanks for giving me time to think. To keep doing what you set your heart on... It's a very hard thing to do. We were all so courageous..."

And finally, a quote from Vivi, and one which was said with finality as it summed up the game. Our hearts broke in bittersweet celebration of a life that was, and one that opened so many hearts throughout the course of 40 hours.

4 Noctis, Final Fantasy XV

Noctis FF XV

"Prompto, Gladio, Ignis. I leave it to you. Walk tall, my friends."

Are you tearing up yet? We all knew that Final Fantasy XV would have a sad ending, we just didn't realize it would come so quick. Rest easy, Noct; your fight will never be in vain. Here's to the best four friends that ever existed.

Additionally, and in stark contrast, the final line before kicking serious butt with Ardyn. Noctis' character development throughout is what made the game so personal and riveting, and this final line was beyond fitting for his transition to adulthood and, by extension, kinghood.

2 Balthier, Final Fantasy XII

"Princess! No need to worry. I hope you haven't forgotten my role in this little story. I'm the leading man. You know what they say about the leading man? He never dies."

One thing, or, rather, one person, whom everyone loved in Final Fantasy XII was Balthier. With a brazen attitude and enough confidence to inspire ten armies, this is one of the most well-known lines after all. And he was right... the leading man never really dies.

1 Vanille, Final Fantasy XIII

"We held the light of hope in our hearts and achieved the impossible."

While Final Fantasy XIII gets plenty of criticism for its gameplay and in-game mechanics, we can't deny the fact that there were some serious emotions floating around this story. Vanille's winning declaration is one that has since stood the test of time, reminding us that the road to success always begins with one word: Hope.
