Final Fantasy VII Remake is due to be released in a few months, and Square Enix is releasing character trailers on the official Twitter page for the game. The second trailer has just been released and it focuses on Barret while showing off his combat skills and the unique traits of his gun-arm.

Barret is the leader of the second incarnation of the eco-terrorist AVALANCHE group. At the start of Final Fantasy VII, AVALANCHE is waging a guerilla war against the Shinra Corporation, which involves bombing Mako reactors in order to stop them from converting the Lifestream into energy. Barret and the story of AVALANCHE take a backseat for the rest of the game after a certain point, save for a few moments where he has to confront his past.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is set to take place during the earlier section of the original game, which means that Barret will be a major character throughout the story. Originally, Barret and the story of AVALANCHE were supplanted by Cloud's pursuit of Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII - but it looks like Final Fantasy VII Remake will give Barret more of a starring role. Sephiroth didn't appear in the flesh in Final Fantasy VII until the Kalm flashback, but the footage of Final Fantasy VII Remake that has been released so far has shown Cloud having hallucinations of Sephiroth - it seems that he will be appearing far earlier in the story this time around.

The canon series material outside of the main game would delve deeper into Barret's personality and examine the guilt he felt over his actions during the original game, including the deaths of innocent Shinra employees during the bombing of the Mako reactors. It's possible that the Final Fantasy VII Remake series will examine Barret in greater depth and incorporate these elements into the main game, seeing as the games are supposed to be expanding upon the material in the original. Hopefully, we'll be seeing more fully-fleshed out incarnations of the other characters as well.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be available for PlayStation 4 on March 3, 2020.
