Final Fantasy VII Remake will make the jump from PlayStation 4 after March 3rd, 2021.

This comes according to a recently leaked box art that has the date listed very clearly underneath the PlayStation Exclusive sticker. With an asterisk denoting the universal sign that things aren’t always as they appear, Final Fantasy VII Remake announces that it will no longer be constrained to the PlayStation console.

The news comes from Wario64 on Twitter who somehow got their mitts on a copy of the official North American box art. As discussed in a previous article, Japan will actually forgo the classic Final Fantasy 7 art in favor of a minimalist logo on a black background. The North American cover art will actually be reversible, so if you prefer the Japanese style you can just flip it and reverse before reinserting.

What will happen after March 3rd, 2021? We don’t know for sure, but Sony has been loosening the strings on their exclusive titles lately. Death Stranding has already announced it will be released from the PlayStation 4 prison, with Horizon Zero Dawn also rumored to be ready to fly the coop after more than 2 years as a PlayStation exclusive title.

PlayStation 4 is by far the winner of the current console war, outselling both Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch (although the Switch is still gaining). It could be that Sony has decided that exclusive titles aren’t what gets people into their consoles and that it’s actually a wide variety of games on a superior platform that bring in customers.

Or more likely, timed exclusive means that you’ll convince as many people to buy a console as can be, while releasing games everywhere else one year later allows Sony to gain additional sales from their back catalog.

Either way, gamers win. We suspect there will be further details in the future as we approach Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s release date of March 3, 2020.
