Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is due to be released on September 3rd: incredibly soon after the initial announcement. However, the fans will only be able to buy a digital copy of the game, as it has been confirmed that it will not receive a physical edition.

A multitude of old Final Fantasy titles have been remastered for modern systems over the past few years, with Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2, and Final Fantasy XII now all available on modern systems. Remasters of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and Final Fantasy VIII are due to be released this year. Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is one of the most impressive ports yet, as most of the character models have been updated to the point where they are unrecognizable compared to their original counterparts. The game will also include a number of features that will make it easier for newcomers, such as being able to disable random encounters or max out the HP/ATB meters with the press of a button.

It seems that Final Fantasy VIII Remastered will only be available in a digital format, as Final Fantasy Union is reporting that Square Enix Japan has confirmed that there won't be any physical editions of the game on any system.

The remastered versions of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IX are also only available in a digital form, which makes sense considering their small file size. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age received a physical release, as did Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, though the Nintendo Switch cartridge only contained Final Fantasy X  with Final Fantasy X-2 being given out as a digital download code due to cartridge limitations. .

There have been plenty of instances of games that started out as digital titles receiving physical editions once they had become popular. It's possible that the three PlayStation Final Fantasy titles could be bundled together on a single disc/cartridge in the future, but the games will remain as digital titles for the time being.

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is due to be released on September 3, 2019.
