There has been a lot of talk regarding remakes of old Final Fantasy games and a key staff member of Final Fantasy VIII has discussed Laguna Loire's role in the story and how it could be expanded into a full game.

The strangest parts of any initial playthrough of Final Fantasy VIII are the moments when the cast pass out and wake up as new characters, with Squall appearing in the body of a soldier named Laguna Loire. Squall (and the player) get to witness snapshots of Laguna's life and his love for two different women. The connection between Squall and Laguna and the cause of the flashbacks are revealed near the end of the game and all of the events make a lot more sense on a second playthrough of the game.

The Scenario Writer of Final Fantasy VIII was Kazushige Nojima and he was recently interviewed by Famitsu magazine as part of the 20th-anniversary celebrations for the game. Nojima was asked about the premise for a possible Final Fantasy VIII spin-off game. According to DualShockersNojima said that he wanted to see a game about the life of Laguna Loire, which showed both his bad side and his good side.

Nojima also talked about how Laguna's role in Final Fantasy VIII was a lot bigger but was made shorter over time. This is the reason why the maps made for the Laguna sections were so large and detailed, even though they weren't used much in the final product.

The announcement of Final Fantasy VII Remake prompted speculation that remakes of Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX were also in the cards. Final Fantasy VIII Remastered was released this year, so it's clear that the game is still on Square Enix's radar. It's possible that Square Enix might make a Final Fantasy VIII Remake in the future and it could show Laguna's story in the way that Nojima had originally intended, or Laguna could receive his own spin-off game that leads into the event of the story.
