There is a lot of lore, story, and characters to keep up with in Final Fantasy 14. Being an MMO has given players a ton of content that it's easy to not be able to keep it all straight or even remember some facts.

At the core of Final Fantasy 14's lore is Hydaelyn who is also known as "The Crystal" or "The Mothercrystal," if you are feeling extra fancy. In a way, she is the players' source of power. You play her chosen one in her fight against the Ascians.

Despite how long the game has been running with new content, Hydaelyn is still shrouded in mystery. By the way, spoilers ahead!

10 She Might Be A Primal

We learned in one of the trailers for Shadowbringers that Hydaelyn is a Primal. The important piece of information came from the Ascian, Emet-Selch. Unfortunately, we do not know if we can truly trust him or not. The truth is not completely known yet. If he is correct though, that is a big deal.

Some fans argue that Hydaelyn being a Primal is impossible because she is basically a Goddess and created them. However, it is possible that the Hydaelyn who the Hero of Light works for is not the original but a Primal tasked with replacing a fallen Goddess. There are many theories and only time will tell if Emet-Selch is telling the truth.

9 Answers & Dragonsong Are From Hydaelyn's Perspective

It was revealed at PAX East by Michael-Christopher Koji Fox that some of the songs in Final Fantasy 14 are from the Mothercrystal's perspective. Koji Fox works as a Square Enix translator and a co-lead lore and world developer for Final Fantasy 14, so he knows what he is talking about.

In particular, Koji Fox said the songs "Answers" and "Dragonsong" are from Hydaelyn's point of view. "Answers" is Hydaelyn explaining to warring tribes that one truly discovers themselves through hardships and "Dragonsong" is Hydaelyn struggling to come to terms with the cycle of the Dragonsong War in Ishgard.

8 Shares Voice Actors With Other Final Fantasy Characters

Hydaelyn's English voice actress, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, has appeared in other Final Fantasy games.  The voice actress also voiced the character, Nora Estheim in Final Fantasy XIII and Rosso in Dirge of Cerberus.

The Japanese voice actress, Masako Ikeda, also voiced Final Fantasy characters such as the Cloud of Darkness the Dissidia spin-off games and Gillian Hewley in Crisis C0re: Final Fantasy VII.

7  Hydaelyn Is Also The Name Of The Planet

As Final Fantasy 14 seldom articulates the name of its main setting, a lot of players might be unaware that Hydaelyn is also the name of the planet. Confusing right?

The reason this fact does not come around very often is that a lot of characters simply say "our world" or "the world." Why the creators decided to give the planet and Goddess the same name is anyone's guess, but it's likely due to the lore that Hydaelyn created the world so some may see it as just an extension of her.

6 The Mothercrystal Is Located At The Aetherial Sea

Have you ever wondered where exactly is the Goddess of Light Hydaelyn? Whenever you get to see the crystal itself, you are just sort of teleported into a place somewhat like outer space.

Actually, you are not in outer space. You are in the Aetherial Sea, which is a place that works a bit like the afterlife. When someone is born, Aether leaves the Aetherial Sea and when someone dies, some Aether returns. In a way, it is like a spirit-world where magic is drawn from. So, of course, the Goddess of Light lives there.

5 The Twelve Pre-Date Hydaelyn

Not every player has started with the original Final Fantasy 14. In the base game before A Realm Reborn, Hydaelyn was not a thing. However, The Twelve were more focused on. They are benevolent deities and include Halone, Menphina, Nymeia, Llymlaen, Thaliak, Oschon, Byregot, Rhalgr, Azeyma, Nald'thal, Nophica, and Althyk.

Could they be connected to Hydaelyn in any way? There is no telling yet. The fact that they pre-date her though, could be important.

4 Midgardsormr Made A Deal With Hydaelyn

The King of Dragons was not originally from the planet Hydaelyn. He actually came from a place creatively named Dragonstar. He ended up on Hydaelyn due to a war between his planet and Omega's homeworld. Midgardsormr fled as his planet was destroyed with some dragon eggs and made a deal with the Goddess to live on her planet.

It is because of this deal that Midgardsormr works for the Mothercrystal.

3 Hydaelyn Used To Work With Zodiark

Zodiark works as a juxtaposition to Hydaelyn. While she stands for light and harmony, he stands for chaos and destruction. He is the being that the Ascians worship.

It is stated in cutscenes where Hydaelyn talks to the Warrior of Light that she and Zodiark used to work together to create a balance. However, Zodiark eventually got too greedy for power and wanted to take over. Thus the balance was disrupted and the Warrior of Light now exists.

2 Hydaelyn Might Have Put Zodiark In The Moon

A lot of fans are theorizing that Zodiark has been sealed into the moon by Hydaelyn. This would explain why we have seen Ascians hanging out on the moon in some cutscenes. Also, a different moon has exploded and Bahamut came out, so maybe that will happen again but with Zodiark?

If it is not Zodiark (though it likely is) then why are the Ascians there? What is on that moon?

1 Hydaelyn Is The Reason You Can Speak All Languages

Those that Hydaelyn blesses with the Echo can also understand all languages. If you have been playing Shadowbringers, you may have noticed that you can understand the Pixies when they speak in their native language (via the subtitles). This is actually because of Hydaelyn's blessing. While seeming minor at first, it is a very useful ability when you need to talk to others that are unlike you.
