Final Fantasy XIV’s long-awaited Patch 5.3 brought the Shadowbringers’ storyline to a conclusion, as well as introducing a number of quality-of-life changes. One of the biggest alterations is an overhaul of A Realm Reborn, FFXIV’s base game.

Patch 5.3 streamlined A Realm Reborn’s main story scenario, cutting or altering many quests that developers decided were too unnecessary or too frustrating. This is amazing news, because the original A Realm Reborn slogged.

But with sweeping changes like this, it’s inevitable that a few babies get thrown out with the bathwater. The new A Realm Reborn has scrapped one of the few quests to give players a good look at the dynamics between the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, an organization that FFXIV’s core characters—including you, the player—are members of.

Twitter user @aetherflows captured the best moments of the now-obsolete quest chain, which began with “Scattered Scions” and took place during the A Realm Reborn patches, when the Scions are trying to track down the Sylph's primal Ramuh. The Scions get separated in the labyrinthian Sylphlands and you, the player, have to track them down. Except… they’re not acting like themselves. Even a player whose eyes glazed over during any cutscene or dialogue segment involving the Scions can recognize that something’s not quite right here.

That’s because each Scion is actually a Sylph imposter using glamor magic, doing their best to masquerade as a Scion based on their limited—and rather insulting—knowledge of each person. You’ve got no-good pretty boy Thancred, a Yda who left her brain behind alongside her pants, and a Y’shtola who’s… terrifyingly similar to the actual Y’shtola. This quest chain is one of the few times you get to see the Scions interacting with each other at length.

Final Fantasy XIV 14 Scions of the Seventh Dawn ARR Changes

Previously, the Scions mostly assembled in the Solar for a long cutscene of nothing but exposition. This quest chain showed off each Scions’ quirks, sense of humor, and interpersonal relationships. Sure, Yda may be a bit of a shimbo, but even she thinks Thancred’s womanizing ways are super weird. And it’s not just you—all the Scions are intimidated by Y’shtola, even Papalymo. This quest chain helped players build a sense of camaraderie with the organization they have no choice but to join as part of the main story.

The Scions serve as the player's found family in FFXIV, and your relationship with them becomes much more prominent as you move through the storyline. Many of FFXIV's most emotional moments rely on you being attached to these characters and invested in the Scions as a group, so it's a shame that Patch 5.3 has cut one of the few quests that not only humanized the Scions but worked to show you that they consider each other friends.

Also, this quest was damn funny, and goodness knows A Realm Reborn needs a dash of funny.
