Final Fantasy XIV Adds Viera - You Know, Those Fan-Service Bunny Ladies - And Gunblades In Next Expansion

Final Fantasy XIV has a reputation for leaning heavily on iconic elements from previous games, such as adding the Gold Saucer and materia from Final Fantasy VI and the minions/mounts being an excuse for additional fanservice characters.

The recent Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival revealed that the fanservice trend is continuing with the Shadowbringers expansion of the game, which will feature the Viera from Final Fantasy XII as a playable race and will add the Gunbreaker job, which uses the iconic gunblade weapon used by Squall Leonhart in Final Fantasy VIII.

The Gunbreaker job is a Tank class that is intended to draw the enemy's attention while counterattacking with powerful blows. The mechanics of the gunblade work in the same way as Squalls, as you have to press the trigger button as the weapon hits in order to make it fire.

The Viera is an all-female race of rabbit humanoids who use the more common kind of fanservice, which may be why they were added to the game over other anticipated Final Fantasy species.

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers will be raising the level cap from 70 to 80, as well as adding a New Game+ mode and the ability to fight alongside prominent NPCs from the story using the new Trust system. Shadowbringers will also be adding a lot of new high-level dungeons and monsters to the game.

We have seen Final Fantasy XIV cross over with other series in the past, such as Dragon Quest, and Shadowbringers will be continuing that tradition with a crossover event involving the world of Nier: Automata as part of a new raid alliance raid series called "YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse", which will include enemies and items from that game.

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers will have a collector's edition an art book, a deck of cards, a statute of a Dark Knight from the game, and a set of unique DLC items, including a wind-up toy of Fran from Final Fantasy XII, a Grani Mount, and Squall's Revolver gunblade from Final Fantasy VIII.

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers will be released for the PC and PlayStation 4 on July 2nd, 2019.
