Final Fantasy XV may have been a rather divisive Final Fantasy game for its audiences. However, it seems to be a big hit for Square Enix, as has now shipped nearly 9 million units internationally, according to an industry analyst.

Self-proclaimed "Independent Video Game Industry Analyst" Benji-Sales tweeted that Final Fantasy XV, the 15th entry in the main Final Fantasy series, has sold approximately 8.9 million units worldwide. This would place it among the best-selling mainline games in the series.

Benji-Sales' tweet can be seen below.

As Benji-Sales suggests, the game is on track to sell beyond 9 million units. Furthermore, it would be impressive if the game sold up to 10 million units.

Benji-Sales states that these statistics place it as the 3rd best-selling Final Fantasy game in the series. However, Twitter user Stefan responded that it is actually the 4th best-selling Final Fantasy game, as Final Fantasy VIII has shipped 9.6 million units. However, this doesn't make the feat any less impressive.

These statistics are particularly of note, given the polarization toward Final Fantasy XV. Although praised for its gameplay, presentation, and other features, it had been criticized by vocal fans for its thin narrative and some derivative gameplay elements. Further, it might be one of the most overrated PlayStation games, as it had also suffered from a variety of bugs, grinding issues, and some absent elements.

All told, most agreed that Final Fantasy XV was a good game and considered a very worthy addition to the celebrated series. However, it didn't reach the record heights set by the likes of Final Fantasy III/VI and Final Fantasy VII, which is set to get a remake soon.

Speaking of which, previews of Final Fantasy VII Remake have been received well by fans. Set to launch in March, Square Enix has released several trailers and previews for Final Fantasy VII Remake that show the potential payoff in developing a remake for the classic PS1 game. The original is also available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch for anyone looking to see what all the acclaim is about before Final Fantasy VII Remake's March 3rd, 2020 release date.
