According to a 4chan rumor, the next mainline Final Fantasy game will be announced soon, and it will have elements of steampunk and Dark Souls.

An anonymous poster on the message board is claiming that Square Enix has "several important games" to announce this summer as part of Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest. They specifically mention two games in the post: Final Fantasy XVI and a brand new IP called Crimson Arbitrium - Agni's Anthology.

Since the leak has no official backing, we must take it with a grain of salt. However, certain claims about FFXVI in particular stand out. In the post, the leaker explains that Naoki Yoshida, best known for relaunching FFXIV, is directing the project. They describe FFXVI as a classic fantasy game with steampunk elements and a battle system inspired by both Final Fantasy XV and Dark Souls.

Final Fantasy has dabbled in the steampunk aesthetic before, particularly in Final Fantasy IX, so it wouldn't be too surprising to see the series return to a similar aesthetic. As for the Dark Souls influence, the battle system has evolved throughout each entry in the Final Fantasy series and, considering how popular Soulslike games have become, it does make sense for the series to branch out in that direction.

Hopefully we will learn more about Final Fantasy XVI during the PlayStation 5 reveal taking place on June 4.
