Nintendo has announced a new Fire Emblem title called Fire Emblem Engage, also showcasing a bunch of gameplay during the latest Nintendo Direct. We also got a release date for the title and it's coming pretty soon, launching on January 20 next year.

The game takes place on the continent of Elios in which heroes working together alongside Emblems defeated and sealed away the deadly Fell Dragon over 1,000 years ago. However, just like with every horribly evil, supernatural force that has been locked away for thousands of years, someone is looking to resurrect the Fell Dragon and it's your job to try and stop them.

The game's trailer then moved into a cinematic portion in which we are introduced to the game's cast of characters, including the main character who seems to have woken up from a 1,000 year slumber. We also see that characters will be able to summon characters from past Fire Emblem titles, as we see a ghostly spectre of Marth fighting alongside the main cast.

We're then shown a very healthy amount of gameplay, including a whole lot of the game's tactical combat. It also seems like players players will be able to equip certain rings on order to summon past characters, as Marth and Sigurd are seen teaming up with characters for powerful moves. Players will also be able to customize their characters clothing, although we didn't get a look at how in-depth this character customization is. Fire Emblem Engage will launch on January 20 next year, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.

While we didn't know Fire Emblem Engage would be announced during this Nintedo Direct, it was rumored that the game was in development and has been pretty much finished for a while. Nintendo insider Emily Rogers claimed that new Fire Emblem game was supposed to launch during the franchise's anniversary in 2020 but was pushed back. The fairly speedy release after today's announcement does support the theory that Nintendo has been sitting on it for a while, but at least we finally get to play next year.
