Best Class For Each Character

Enchanter Framme And Tiki Battle Preview Pose In Firene Skirmish

With 36 characters in the base game, you have several options for building your perfect team. A lot of the lord main characters in the game have exclusive classes, and generally speaking, they should stay in these for the whole game.

There are some exceptions to this rule, which we will discuss below.

The DLC classes, Mage Cannoneer and Enchanter, have been added to the game as of the Wave Four expansion pack, adding new options to the base-game units for those who bought the DLC. The table below lays out each character and the best class for them to be promoted into:

Lythos

Unit

Best Class

Reason

Fire Emblem Engage Thumbnail Image Support Alear

Alear

Divine Dragon or Swordmaster

  • Capitalizes on sword prowess.
  • Excellent synergy between personal and class growths (focusing on Speed and Dexterity).
  • Swordmaster gives even more Dexterity for Crit-stacking and Avoid builds at the expense of defenses.
  • Diving Dragon allows for special synergies with Emblems.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Vander

Vander

Great Knight

  • Starts overpowered and becomes terrible as the game progresses.
  • Not worth investing into any other class.
  • He's the best he'll ever be.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Clanne

Clanne

Mage Knight

  • Severely underrated unit (second-best Speed in the game) that performs best in magic classes despite impressive Strength growth.
  • Changing to a physical unit is doable, but magic classes perform best overall in gameplay.
  • Becomes an amazing Avoid-tank Mage Knight with far better Speed and survivability than popular mage Citrinne.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Framme

Framme

Enchanter or Martial Master

  • Excellent support character acting as the main healer will do best with support classes like Enchanter (DLC) or Martial Master.
  • Best Speed in the game allows Martial Master to quadruple attack in early-to-mid-game Maddening.

Firene

Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Alfred

Alfred

Avenir

  • Avenir gives access to unique Golden Lotus skill that prevents 50 percent of physical damage taken.
  • Terrible speed means he won't excel in other speed-based classes; Avenir capitalizes on defense and pure Strength instead.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Celine

Celine

Vidame

  • Unique class, Vidame, gives special Ignis skill that may increase her outgoing damage.
  • Vidame allows access to multiple attacking options while opening avenue to supporting staves.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Boucheron

Boucheron

Wyvern Knight or Mage Cannoneer (DLC)

  • Wyvern Knight increases mobility, fixes his Strength growths, and synergizes well with good Speed and Build growths.
  • Mage Cannoneer (which swaps Strength and Dexterity) uses Boucheron's high Dex for damage, but may experience some accuracy problems in late-game due to poor Strength growth.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Etie

Etie

Sniper or Bow Knight

  • Etie's good Strength but lackluster Dexterity can be patched with 20 percent growth of Sniper.
  • Bow Knight gives increased mobility at the expense of slightly lower Hit and Critical rates.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Louis

Louis

General

  • Natural progression is sometimes best; requires little effort to make him into a great unit.
  • Personal growths in Defense is the second-best in base game, and General makes it shine best.
  • Armoured tank engine that strikes fear in the hearts of all your physical-based enemies and shakes the very earth.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Chloe

Chloe

Griffin Knight or Martial Master

  • Mixed classes that make the most of Chloe's balanced Strength and Magic growths.
  • Griffin Knight allows great mobility, avoidance, and allows running deadly Levin Sword with Chloe.
  • Martial Master makes the best use of Chloe's equal Strength and Magic but does suffer a 31 Speed cap that affects late-game Maddening play.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Jean

Jean

Martial Master or Berserker

  • Jean's Personal Skill, Expertise, means Jean can viably be in any class due to doubling the class growths of any class.
  • Martial Master makes good use of Jean's evenly distributed stats but also, because of Qi Adept, pairing with Soren ring creates an invincible Nosferatu tank that absorbs 100 percent of dealt damage.
  • Berserker gives Jean the highest cap HP (96) in the game early-on and a 60-75 percent Strength growth, making him a crit-death machine with massive health.

Do not level Jean until you reclass him into whatever class you want.

Brodia

Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Yunaka

Yunaka

Thief

  • Begins strong and ends strong.
  • Excellent pairing synergy with Corrin for Fog that makes Yunaka unhittable.
  • Critical-hitting monster with large Avoid means you'll never want to re-class her.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Diamant

Diamant

Successeur

  • Makes the most of S-rank swords as well as access to axes.
  • Class gains Sol skill, leaving him open to other Engage rings as well as generally good survivability
  • Successeur makes the best use of his personal skills - practically tailored for him.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Alcryst

Alcryst

Tireur d'élite

  • Best archer in the game gains personal class that enhances his amazing archery-related skills immensely
  • Class skill gives Luna and, because of personal stats, triggers very frequently.
  • One of the highest Speeds in the game and made even more deadly by Lyn.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Citrinne

Citrinne

Sage

  • Extremely high Magic growths and poor physical stats mean Citrinne is meant for magic classes.
  • Sage gives access to S-rank tomes and B-rank staves and increases her Magic growths the most for huge offensive potential.
  • Mage Knight can work, but its Speed growth is wasted on Citrinne. Her low Strength also means a wasted ability to use swords.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Amber

Amber

Halberdier or Paladin

  • Halberdier's and Amber's speed are both poor, but their combined Strength creates a unit that one-shots without any care for Speed or doubling.
  • Paladin works well with his Strength with additional utility with Pivot and increased mobility.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Jade

Jade

General or Great Knight

  • Has an amazing Defensive Stat with a personal skill that helps with her passable Resistance.
  • Great Strength build makes her an iron wall that deals decent damage.
  • Slightly less effective than Louis but can be a better wall on maps with a mage around each corner.
  • Can give Great Knight for less tank but more Movement.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Lapis

Lapis

Wyvern Knight

  • Swordmaster doesn't fit well due to her low Strength and the low Might of sword-type weapons, making her unable to deal consistently good damage. Can be fixed with temporary investment in Berserker.
  • Wyvern Knight fixes problems with Strength and gives Build growth to help with heavier weapons and increase Speed.
  • Air Raid increases Lapis's speed even more.
  • Should invest into increasing Strength over Dexterity due to inability to make good use of Critical-builds.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Saphir

Saphir

Warrior

  • Decent class that gives access to both axes and bows for Killer Bows and Tomahawk throws. Great for Chain-attacking.
  • Late-game recruitment means investment is costly and time-consuming.

Can sometimes struggle with Hit Rate, so if Warrior (which is her most solid class) is struggling for you, consider switching to Sniper or Bow Knight.

Elusia

Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Ivy

Ivy

Lindwurm

  • Unique class is tailor-made for Ivy, increasing her Magic, Movement, and Speed.
  • Gives access to high-level tomes as well as staves for utility.
  • Class skill may add half of Ivy's impressive Magic stat as a bonus to her outgoing damage, making her a dangerous adversary in combat.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Hortensia

Hortensia

Sleipnir Rider

  • Best healing unit and class in the game with personal skill-preserving uses of staves for increased utility options.
  • Has one of the highest Resistance stats in the game, resisting even deadly spells like Wind.
  • Increased mobility means the ability to provide support over long distances and between split groups.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Kagetsu

Kagestu

Swordmaster or Warrior

  • Tailor-made for Swordmaster due to insane Speed and Strength builds, but he can excel in most physical, fast offensive classes.
  • Personal skill lowers enemy Avoid, increasing Kagetsu's hit rate.
  • Warrior is a Critical-Rate factory making good use of Kagetsu's Dexterity and Speed while massively increasing his Strength and Build.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Zelkov

Zelkov

Thief or Wolf Knight

  • Basically an upgraded version of Yunaka and is synergized especially for Thief.
  • Covert Class with Corrin and Zelkov's personal skill, lowering enemies' Hit Rate by 10 percent, creates a scary Avoid class.
  • Wolf Knight trades Avoid tanking for more deadly Critical and Speed potential as well as increased mobility.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Rosado

Rosado

Wyvern Knight

  • Rosado's amazing physical stats means that Rosado can be decent at any physical class.
  • Wyvern Knight is already a powerhouse for Rosado, making reclassing out of Wyvern Knight only necessary if you have too many flying classes but still want to use Rosado.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Goldmary

Goldmary

Hero

  • Hero makes the best use of Goldmary's stats for her defensive abilities, making her a viable damage-dealing wall and excellent Chain-Attacker.
  • Her personal skill also means that two-range weapons often have an increased Critical-Hit ratio that stacks with Chain Attacks.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Anna

Anna

High Priest or Mage Knight

  • High Priest has the highest Luck class growth to make the most of Anna's personal ability and personal growths; best for farming for Gold.
  • More offensive route that grows Anna's impressive magic stat hyper-aggressively with higher Build and Speed; best for offensive Anna.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Lindon

Lindon

Sage

  • Lindon is recruited too late to justify reclassing him into anything.
  • Stats already synergize very well with Sage due to his high Magic growths and base stats.
  • Low-effort, high-reward type of character.

Solm

Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Timerra

Timerra

Picket

  • Odd spread of personal growths combined with Picket class growths make a well-rounded unit that doesn't excel at any one thing but can be a good initial damage-dealer.
  • High Speed, Defense, and Resistance allows for excellent use of Picket's special skill, Sandstorm, to calculate outgoing damage with 150 percent of Defense.
  • Picket gives access to S-rank lances for great outgoing damage.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Fogado

Fogado

Cupidio or Warrior

  • Cupido allows Fogado to be a mounted bow user that also has good use of the Radiant Bow, taking care of armored units.
  • Decent Dexterity means occasional use of "Back At You" Cupido skill for additional damage but does struggle with Hit Rate.
  • Warrior increases his Strength and makes good use of his high Speed growth at the expense of his Movement.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Merrin

Merrin

Wolf Knight or Wyvern Knight

  • Absolutely perfect the way she is thanks to tailored growths, good mobility, and Dagger access.
  • Wolf Knight is great for Chain Attacking and causing debuffs with Dagger weapons.
  • Wolf Knight suffers by the endgame due to poor Strength growths, making Wyvern Knight a decent second option to keep her mobile but increase damage.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Panette

Panette

Berserker or Mage Cannoneer (DLC)

  • Goddess Panette is one of the most broken units in the game and excels in most physical classes.
  • Berserker's high health and access to axes make Panette a hard-hitting Critical monster capable of tanking blows, having 100 percent Critical chance, and ending enemy lives in a single hit (improved when paired with Ike).
  • The only downfall of Berserker comes with a Dexterity cap and the axe's innate low accuracy, making her Hit Rate poor against high-Avoid enemies.
  • Mage Cannoneer improves Panette's accuracy immensely while still enjoying good damage at long distances, having a similar effect to Berserker with a good build.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Bunet

Bunet

Hero or Warrior

  • Late-game unit with low stats (especially slow Speed) makes investing into this unit ill-advised in most runs.
  • Great Knight is okay, but his lacking defensive stats fall off and makes him poor at being a front-line tank as compared to other, more viable options.
  • Hero helps Bunet set up as a chipping Back-Up Chain-Attacker, useful in an overall army loadout.
  • Warrior gives Bunet more damage, access to bows, and effectiveness as a distant Chain-Attacker.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Pandreo

Pandreo

Sage or Mage Knight

  • One of the strongest mage units in the game makes the best use of strong offensive magic classes.
  • Mage Knight makes use of Pandreo's good Speed, allowing him to double with several tomes like Bolganone; best for offensive play.
  • Sage gives access to staves for utility and S-rank tomes but doesn't have as much speed; best for balance of offense and utility.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Seadall

Seadall

Dancer

  • Only possible Dancer in the game and should not be promoted into anything else.
  • Stats are terrible, but the utility of giving other units an extra turn is invaluable and should not be overlooked.

Gradlon

Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Veyle

Veyle

Fell Child or Griffin Knight

  • Fell Child gives Veyle the ability to play as a debuff unit with decent growths and utility as well as Dagger access.
  • Fell Child gives Dragon class type for special Emblem Ring bonuses.
  • Fell Child class is the only class able of using her two unique weapons, Misericorde and Obscurité.
  • Griffin Knight gives large stat increases - especially in Speed - and access to staves for a unique playstyle that works just as well as Fell Child.
Fire Emblem Engage Profile Thumbnail of Support Log Mauvier

Mauvier

Royal Knight

  • High defensive stats and good damage output means Mauvier already excels in his base class of Royal Knight.
  • Operates very well as a front-line support class with good defenses and access to staves.

Nel

Fell Child or Wyvern Knight

  • Fell Child gives Dragon type for Emblem abilities and Dragonstone weapons as well as S-rank lances.
  • Special Fell Child skill isn't great or widely applicable, and Fell Child's stats are poor.
  • Wyvern Knight fixes Nel's stat issues while increasing viability of class skill and overall Movement.
Fire Emblem Engage Thumbnail Image Support Rafal

Rafal

Fell Child or Warrior

  • Fell Child's special ability increases adjacent allies' Engage Meter by one at the start of each turn, making this an amazing ability for general utility purposes.
  • Fell Child class gives Dragon type for Emblem Ring abilities and Dragonstone weapons as well as S-rank axes.
  • Warrior fixes Fell Child's terrible growths and stats, helping to make him a dangerous Crit-build attacker for better viability in active combat.
Fire Emblem Engage Thumbnail Image Support Zelestia

Zelestia

Melusine

  • Generalized stats mean she can be in any class and succeed, but only Zelestia can be a Melusine.
  • Melusine is basically a Mage Knight on wings and can be a jack-of-many-trades.
  • Special class skill, Soulblade, calculates damage based on the average of a foe's defense and resistance, making her attacks viable against any enemy type.
Fire Emblem Engage Thumbnail Image Support Gregory

Gregory

Sage

  • Poor Speed means Gregory won't excel at Mage Knight, but large Magic growth makes him similar to Citrinne in usability as a Mage.
  • Poor Dexterity growth makes Hit Rates low in the late game, requiring fixing to make it viable.
  • Reclassing into anything else is too costly to be worth it.
Fire Emblem Engage Thumbnail Image Support Madeline

Madeline

General

  • Best Defense personal growth in the game plus extra growth in Resistance makes her an amazing General that outclasses even Louis.
  • Personal skill that lowers all damage by two if an ally is adjacent further increases the potential of Madeline as a frontline tank.
