Before the dreaded sixth chapter of Fire Emblem: Engage's Fell Xenologue, you'll be tasked with defeating the twist-villain, Nil. Feigning his weakness in the previous chapters, you'll be entering this map with a lot of frustration and memories of carrying his dead weight the whole time. Time to take it out on the man himself.

RELATED: Fire Emblem Engage: Fell Xenologue - Seeds Of Unrest Walkthrough

Thankfully, you won't need to carry around any dead weight in this chapter. Finally, you'll be able to play this map just like any other. With no fancy gimmicks or annoying Forced Deployments, you're finally free to enjoy this interesting challenge of a map on your own terms. Are you ready?

Unit Selection And Battle Preparations

Camilla Pairs With Nel In Chapter 5 Emblem Ring Selection

With no Four Winds or dragons to hold you down, you're finally allowed the option of a full ten units of your own choosing.

Yes, Alear and Nel will be on the map, but all you'll be able to change is Nel's Emblem Ring. Give her Camilla's ring for Dragon Vein spam while she waits for rescue.

Diamant And Hector Emblem Rings Preview Chapter 5 Fell Xenologue

For the rest, there's a full range of possibilities at your disposal. First and foremost, you'll want to favor units you're most comfortable with and have rings with high Bond levels.

Secondly, there are a few units that will stand out on this map and should be prioritized:

Any Good Lyn User

Any Lyn user is almost essential for this map's success. Astra Storm is required to reach the Corrupted Wyverns that will deal significant damage repeatedly to Alear in their prison room. Otherwise, you will need to sacrifice a unit for the entirety of the map to heal Alear.

Louis and Sigurd

A strong physical tank, and the end of the map will favor someone with good use of Override. Add Pair Up skill to deal with meddlesome Corrupted Wolves.

Veyle and Veronica

Fortify+ is a strong boon in this map. Ensure Veyle can use it. This will both heal Alear and Nel while also removing Corrupted Wolf debuffs.

Panette (and Ike), Bunet, or Jade

Any strong axe user is a plus here. They'll be front-running on the west side of the map to deal with all the lances.

Zelkov and Corrin

Corrin's Fog Vein will be a good way to Avoid tank the Corrupted Wolves and assist Louis. Pair Up will negate Chain Attacks.

Diamant and Hector or Kagetsu and Marth

Having another strong tank unit with access to swords will help against the Berserkers and also wall-up the Corrupted Wolf choking point.

Veyle and Veronica Use Fortify + On Allies In Chapter 5

Likewise, you'll want to make sure you have a good staff unit on both sides. There are a few worth investing in:

  • Hortensia
  • Jean (and Soren) and/or Framme (and Tiki)
  • Pandreo
  • Chloe

Any or all of these will be greatly useful here. In essence, the more staff-users you have on this field, the better.

So long as you meet a quota of three tanks of any kind, and three or four staff-capable units, you can fill the team however you desire and with whatever inventories you prefer.

Top Recommended Units

Louis and Sigurd, Veyle and Veronica, Zelkov and Corrin, Any Good Lyn User

Thankfully, this map is fairly straightforward. It features several narrow corridors perfect for walling with tank units and firing over shoulders with ranged support.

As you progress, you'll need to keep a close eye on Alear and Nel. Trapped in their rooms, you'll need staff-capable units with Physic to keep them alive until you arrive.

Louis Prepares To Attack Berserker On Eastern Path In Party Split

Alear can't do anything in their room until saved, but Nel can use Elixirs when needed but shouldn't attack Nil. Even allies shouldn't attack Nil until the end of the map or risk spawning new enemies.

If equipped with Camilla, Nel should use every turn using Stone Vein until she has less than 13-20 health. When her health is low enough, use an Elixir.

With two direct paths in front of you, you'll want to split your party into either an equal split or a 4-6 ratio (west-to-east), depending on how strong you believe your western team to be.

West Path

Panette Charges Down West Path Toward Mage Cannoneer

This shorter path is very important for paving the road later for your eastern team. You'll want to march through here as quickly as possible and take advantage of breaking stances.

Play aggressively here after spending Turn One to bait and rush forward to defeat all enemies in sight in a timely manner.

You don't want to stay anywhere for long thanks to the long-ranged capabilities of the Mage Cannoneers on this path.

The best team for this path does include using your Avoidance-Corrin tank, allowing you to dodge the Mage Cannoneers and protect your other units with Fog Vein. If you have a Soren-user, send them down this path with the Corrin-user to spam Assign Decoy for extra protection.

Injured Panette Prepares To Finish Enemies With Yunaka And Chloe

Once you reach the lower part of this path, you'll encounter an enemy mage with Elthunder that might prove an issue to your units (especially your axe unit). Using Assign Decoy can be helpful, but otherwise, you'll need to be crafty.

Try using your other units to defeat the Mage Cannoneer quickly and protect them with Fog Vein to prevent being accosted by the enemy Halberdier. A single attack (and Chain Attack) will likely strike your axe unit if they're in range. Anything more will likely result in their death, so play cautiously.

When the Halberdier and Mage unit are close enough, defeat them without walking into either the range of the enemy General or the plus-shaped 'Let it Fly' attack from the southernmost Mage Cannoneer.

Halberdier, Sage, and Corrupted Wyvern Reinforcements Appear To South

Around this time, reinforcements in the southernmost room will appear. They're not quite in range yet, but they'll be a handful to face.

Defeat the General blocking your path into the next room and the Mage Cannoneer behind to clear everyone out. There should be no other units in this room yet, so take one round to prepare yourself mentally for how you'll deal with the reinforcements on top of the next room's standard enemies at once.

Corrin Supports Panette With Fog Vein Cover Against Enemies

Baiting forward with your Corrin-user, stay out of the range of the Corrupted Wyvern as long as possible.

If you have a Soren-user, this should be the time to use Cataclysm on the group of approaching enemies. The debuffs will prove useful in the coming rounds. If not, a Great Aether and Tiki's Divine Blessing combo will work just as well.

Do whatever it takes with your units to defeat the enemies as they flood into the treasure room. Don't waste turns attempting to open the chests in the meantime.

It's recommended to prioritize the Sage as it comes into the room. They're the most likely to deal damage, and their Mystical classification means they'll ignore Corrin's Fog Vein benefits.

Ivy Flanks Defeated Mage Cannoneer While Yunaka And Panette Face Wyvern

During this time, you'll likely be close enough with your eastern team to start flanking the Corrupted Wyvern and Mage Cannoneer in the next room. Use your own reinforcements to aid you.

Once all standard units are gone, you can race forward with your western team to aid in defeating the Corrupted Wyvern. And when it's finally gone, you can open the chests and join both teams into one concentrated force.

East Path

Eastern Team Defeats All Enemies While Louis Races Into Pillars Ahead

On the eastern path, you'll want to rush forward to take care of the Mage Cannoneer targeting Alear.

Keep a staff unit near the back with Physic to take care of Alear where needed, but have your lance tank and a second tanking unit to take care of the numerous Berserkers and Mage Cannoneers on this path.

The berserkers' strength is high enough to break even the infamous Louis's defenses and deal damage. Do not underestimate them.

The Enchanter will also sometimes use Reflect Physical, so you'll need your mage units on standby to deal with the Berserkers if your physical tanks can't.

Corrupted Berserker Reinforcement Appears On Stairs At End Of Hallway

Berserker reinforcements will begin reappearing at the end of the first horizontal corridor on this path once you begin engaging with the others there. One is equipped with a tomahawk.

As you proceed forward, prioritize the Berserkers as they'll cause the most damage to your units. The Mage Cannoneer will only ever target Alear - even with Assign Decoy.

Using Engage Attacks here isn't a bad idea since it's early in the map and you'll have time to recharge before you reach the nefarious boss corridor, but save Lyn's Astra Storm.

Nil Comments On Summoning A Corrupted Wyvern To Use On Alear

Once the units in this hallway are dealt with, Nil will soon summon a Corrupted Wyvern within one-to-two turns (depending on your progress). This wyvern will continuously deal damage against Alear and leave stat-affecting miasma.

Use Astra Storm to deal with the wyvern permanently and save yourself from stationing a permanent healing unit for Alear.

Diamant Tanks Corrupted Berserker While Allies Prepare To Race For Enchanter

Carry on to the south, baiting the units to the south with one of your physical tanks. Again, they are Berserkers flanked by an Enchanter.

Deal with all three, but take notice of the attack range of the Corrupted Wolves in the room further east. Avoid it for now.

If needed, you can now make a detour to the central chest for an extra Physic staff.

Ivy And Louis Sigurd Rush To Aid Pinned Western Team

Continue south with mobile units that can quickly reach the southern room and deal with the Mage Cannoneer harassing the western team. Provide support where possible and leave one tank behind in case the wolves begin to move.

Once the Mage Cannoneer and Corrupted Wyvern in the south are cleaned up, your western team should be able to join you, and you can all begin facing the remainder of the map together.

Walling The Wolves

Louis Diamant And Yunaka Wall Off The Corrupted Wolves

As your teams join together, the wolves will begin moving and challenge your units. You can stop them by walling them with your tank units in the tight corridor doorway.

Keep your formation tight to prevent them from being able to use Chain Attacks and fire over your tanks with ranged support to deal with the pack. Veronica's Fortify+ or a Restore Staff should be used where necessary to remove their debuffs.

A thief will begin making their way north to the nearby chest for a Fortify staff. You can chase them if needed, but otherwise, they aren't worth the hassle.

Wolves will summon their own reinforcements after a turn, so wait until all wolves are finished to proceed into the large room.

Louis Stands On Engage Well To Refill Meter With Sigurd

As you proceed, set all of your units on the outside of the Mage Cannoneer's range. You'll want to send a single unit in need of an Engage meter refill south if that unit is:

  • A Sigurd user
  • An Ike user
  • A Tiki user
  • A Veronica user that isn't Veyle (otherwise, simply wait until her meter is full)
All Units Stand Outside Mage Cannoneer Range To Prepare

Press all units into formation on the outside of the range with lowest movement units at the front. Corrin's user is the priority here, and they absolutely must be on the very edge of the formation range.

If you placed Camilla on a different unit instead of Nel, they should also be a priority.

Yunaka Clears Miasma With Fog Vein While Others Defend

With all units in place, send your Corrin unit forward with Fog Vein to clear the square of miasma near the narrow corridor filled with enemies. Using Assign Decoy or putting bait on the southernmost edge of the standard enemy (not the Mage Cannoneer) range to help offset the balance against your Corrin unit is highly advised.

With the miasma cleared and enemies baited, begin moving all units quickly into position at the entrance of the narrow corridor.

Fogado will have begun summoning his three rounds of reinforcements in the past turn:

  • Round One: Three Wyvern Knights
  • Round Two: Three Great Knights
  • Round Three: Three Mage Knights
Panette And Diamant Create Barricade Against Wyvern Knights

Place two tanking axe users (like Diamant and Panette) up at the front of the corridor to block it. Ranged units should be placed directly behind them, and your Louis and Sigurd should be on standby and at the ready.

When the Wyvern Knights are defeated and the Great Knights follow-up, switch to two tanking sword users. For Diamant or Bunet, switch weapons. For a Panette paired with Ike or Louis with Sigurd, Engage to use your engaged sword weapon, and so on.

Louis Uses Sigurd Override To Defeat Fogado And All Minions

With the final reinforcements summoned, Fogado and the Mage Knights will rush forward and flank the Great Knights. If you're lucky, they'll line up for you and grant you an opportunity at using Sigurd's Overdrive with a Ridersbane.

If you're not, Corrin's Torrential Roar, Tiki's Flame Breath, Soren's Cataclysm, Roy's Blazing Lion, and so forth are all good AOE options for crowd control.

Defeat all the knights in the hallway first and gang up on Fogado.

Tiki And Framme Use Fire Breath On Guarding Mage Knights For Fogado

He has two Resurrection Beads (so three health bars), and his use of Veronica means that he becomes more of a risk the more damage he takes. Thankfully, he falls into the same pitfall Diamant did in Chapter Three: poor magic Resistance and no Range Three options.

Abuse Thoron and Elthunder, and use any method possible with all remaining units to take care of Fogado. If you can't finish him before the round ends, you'll need to Assign Decoy, block him with high Resistance units, disturb his Movement with Corrin or Soren, or say goodbye to one of your weaker and slower tank units.

Alcryst Prepares To Use Astra Storm Against Hortensia

Once Fogado is gone, the next obstacle is Hortensia.

Placed next to an Enchanter and behind two Generals, Horetensia cannot be baited forward unless hit with a long range attack like Bolting or Astra Storm.

You'll have to Assign Decoy on a high Resistance unit placed within her range and take out the Generals and, especially, the Enchanter beside her. Her high magic and speed mean that any unit weak to magic placed within range is certain to bite the bullet.

Hortensia Stalwart Skill Battle Menu Preview

Hortensia has Stalwart, making her resistant to things like Excalibur and bows, so you'll need to take advantage of her weaker defenses and lack of Range Three options. Longbows work very well here.

Additionally, she can be stance-broken by any martial arts (if equipped with tome), so break her with fists before sending in any unit that might have otherwise been at risk against her.

Nil Summons Corrupted Mage Cannoneer In His Room

While Hortensia is being dealt with, Nil will summon another Mage Cannoneer to begin firing at Alear. Like the last one, it won't care about Assign Decoy, so you'll be on a race against the clock to reach it before it kills Alear.

Defeat Hortensia and make a beeline for Nil's room.

Felling The Dragon - Nil

Units Defeat Hortensia And Prepare To March On Nil's Room

As you race into Nil's room, he'll begin targeting any unit weaker than Nel, so be cautious.

Take out the Mage Cannoneer first, then the Martial Master, and then finally turn your sights on Nil. If required, use a healing stave on Nel to prepare.

Corrin Prepares To Throw Dagger At Nil To Lower Stats Draconic Hex

Nil boasts, unfortunately, one of the highest (if not the highest) Resistance stats in Fire Emblem: Engage. Magic will, in most cases, completely fail to affect him. You'll have to rely on your physical units.

To make the most out of your units, begin facing Nil with your Corrin user. Even if you deal no damage, the use of Draconic Hex will allow you an edge against his high stats.

Although magic might not normally work on Nil, he is still susceptible to magic attacks done via Chain Attack. Thus, setting a mage with Lucina equipped within range of Nil will still deal normal Chain Attack damage and can be abused.

With his stats a little more manageable, you can begin wailing on Nil with all of your physical units.

Louis Uses Sigurd's Tyrfing Against Nil To Stance Break And Box In

Prioritize using sword-wielders to break his stance to create opportunities for your squishier units, and place your bulkiest melee fighters in the squares all around and adjacent to Nil.

Boxing Nil in is a key strategy since he has no ranged options. Additionally, you'll likely be unable to one-turn Nil due to his bulky stats and the lacking help your melee fighters can provide.

If you have a Byleth-user, Seadall, or Veronica (Contract), you may be able to pull it off one-turning Nil if necessary or if you're feeling like a bit of revenge.

Chloe Prepares To Use Twin Strike Against Nil With Sieglinde

Engage Attacks like Eirika's Twin Strike are especially effective here, and physical bow units like Alcryst or Etie can provide needed range support for decent damage.

No matter your strategy, it will be just you against Nil. Put your all into defeating him to get back at him for all the headaches he caused you and is about to cause in the next chapter.
