Quick Links

There are six optional characters scattered across Fire Emblem: Engage's map. Some may appear along your path in the main story, and others will require you to take a step out of the way to challenge their unique maps. Regardless of where they appear, most are fearsome units capable of securing foundational spots on your team.

RELATED: Fire Emblem Engage: How To Recruit Every DLC Wave 2 Emblem

Three of these units can be part of your early team, and two of them rank among the most useful and flexible units in the entire game's roster, but the other three are nothing to scoff at either in your mid-game run. Keeping note of when these units show up can be the key to developing a highly successful team.

Jean is the first optional character to recruit in any playthrough and arguably one of the best. The defacto Aptitude Villager appears in an optional paralogue once you've completed the fifth chapter in the main story.

You do not need to speak with Jean during this battle, but if Alear speaks to him, he'll be able to join your roster during the fight.

Jean dying in his paralogue does not appear to affect his joining your team once his paralogue is cleared. He will join your team so long as the map is finished.

Anna's paralogue is available after completing the sixth chapter in the story mode, and challenging it will reward you with Anna joining your roster.

Like with Jean, finishing the map will automatically recruit Anna to your team, but you can recruit her during the battle by interacting with her. She's hidden within the central treasure chest and can be spoken to by Alear.

Within the ninth chapter of the story mode, Jade will be an optionally recruited unit and the first that can be permanently missed.

To recruit Jade, you'll need to speak with her with either Diamant or Alear. She's placed in the center of the map between the enemy's main forces.

She's marked as an Ally unit and will work with your team for the map regardless of whether she's been recruited. If she's killed by any enemy units while she's waiting in the center, you will no longer be able to recruit her.

In Hard and Maddening, Jade roughly has three to four turns before she encounters an enemy unit that defeats her. She will continue Meditating or using potions to restore her health while waiting for your units to arrive.

Seadall is the first unit you can miss by not interacting with them. He's recruitable during his chapter, Chapter 15, by speaking with Alear. Afterward, he will immediately join your roster and the current battle.

If you clear the map without talking to Seadall, he will not join your roster, and the only way to recruit him will be by reloading a previous save to retry the map.

Lindon, like Seadall, is only available during his specific chapter, Chapter 18. However, Lindon is unique as the only recruitable unit that first appears as an "Enemy Unit." He will attack you with powerful magic if you get close enough.

To recruit Lindon, speak with him with any of these units during the map battle:

  • Alear
  • Ivy
  • Hortensia

Getting to Lindon can sometimes be difficult thanks to his use of Thoron. A good strategy in reaching Lindon without killing him is by using the Flame Cannon to limit his mobility and sending a flying unit (like Ivy or Hortensia) to speak with him.

Dealing damage to Lindon has no effect on his willingness to be recruited, but killing him will be permanent.

To recruit Saphir, you'll need to make it all the way to Chapter 19, The Dead Town, in the story mode.

She'll be placed at the beginning of the map in front of several lance units and Mauvier's entourage and is registered as an "Ally Unit." You'll need to reach her quickly and talk with her with either Alear or Diamant to recruit her onto your team.

You can ensure Saphir's safety with the Flame Cannon on the ship to lower the mobility of enemy Corrupted in front of her. Doing this with a Sage equipped with Physic will also ensure you have a healer to keep her alive while Alear and your other units circle around to reach her.
