Updated on February 23rd, 2022 by Geoffrey Martin: Fans of tactics and strategy games really have a lot on offer from both the AAA gaming sphere and the indie gaming scene, with everything in between. The Fire Emblem series thrives off of its intricate and nuanced gameplay interwoven with great narrative beats and characters. There is a great diversity of tactics and strategy games set across a range of themes and aesthetics from sci-fi to fantasy and even horror. By nature, tactics and strategy RPGs have a lot of content to dive into. While they can often feel overwhelming at first, the more you get into them, the more you tend to get out of the experiences as a whole.

17 Black Legend

battle taking place in black legend

If you want your tactical strategy game to feature a good dose of mystical horror then look no further than Black Legend. In Black Legend, you and your band of misfits must work to stop a devious and harrowing cult, one that is inspired by Mephisto. Taking place in the 17th century, Black Legend mixes medieval sensibilities with an overarching horror theme.

The medieval city of Grant is teeming with all sorts of monstrosities. You and your mercenaries must put an end to the stranglehold the cult has on the city and its inhabitants. you will take part in deeply strategic battles that blend traditional combat, magic, and a heaping amount of alchemy.

16 Fae Tactics

The characters take a breather in Fae Tactics

For a more lighthearted, anime-style tactical strategy game then Fae Tactics might just be the next game to add to your wishlist. Fae Tactics is very reminiscent of old-school strategy games such as Disgaea or Final Fantasy Tactics. Taking on a vibrant cartoony aesthetic, Fae Tactics tasks you to play as the magician Peony as she and her pals move from area to area, performing spells and defeating a host of baddies.

Fae Tactics takes the more traditional approach to a tactics strategy game whereby you and your team move across a set stage with various tiles to hop between. Battles are of course turn-based but they feel faster than their traditional genre counterparts. Fae Tactics is an endlessly engaging and charming strategy RPG that must just be your next hidden gem.

The gameplay is a tactical turn-based and just like Fire Emblem, the goal is to outmaneuver rival gangs on the battlefield. 14 Octopath Traveler

Octopath Traveler's main characters

13 Vandal Hearts

Vandal Hearts has a great story and good starting point SRPG newbies

The first Vandal Hearts was released on the PS1 in 1996 and has become a cult hit among fans of JRPGs and strategy RPGs. Its gameplay is nowhere near as complex as the Fire Emblem series or other games mentioned on this list.

What it lacks in complexity, however, it more than makes up for in the story, characters, and great writing. Coming from the same studio that created the Suikoden series, Vandal Hearts has a story steeped in political intrigue, war, and loss – a perfect fit for a Fire Emblem fan.

12 XCOM 2

XCOM 2 has a permadeath feature that rivals Fire Emblem

The XCOM series is one of the most influential turn-based strategy games of all time and despite being a Western-developed title it shares many traits that would appeal to fans of Fire Emblem. One of these elements is the game’s ability to pull players in and get them to care about their characters.

Just like Fire Emblem, XCOM has a Permadeath feature and there’s a genuine sense of loss when losing a character on the battlefield. Of course, the execution is very different but the depth and modern concepts that appear in XCOM 2 and its DLC War of the Chosen are some of the best Western equivalents available.

11 Divinity: Original Sin 2

Divinity features very open-ended gameplay and excellent tactical combat

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is highly regarded as one of the greatest RPGs of all time. It offers a near-unprecedented amount of freedom where one player’s actions can really shape the world around them in a manner that’s only rivaled in classic CRPGs like the Baldur’s Gate franchise.

On that basis alone Divinity: Original Sin 2 is an easy recommendation, but it’s the turn-based combat that will appeal to fans of Fire Emblem. There’s a real sense of strategy in the gameplay where everything from the elements to the high ground plays a part in successful combat scenarios in what is a very deep combat system.

7 Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark

Fell Seal is the Tactics Ogre successor you've been waiting for

Developed by 6 Eyes Studio the indie team responsible for creating cult RPG Sigil: Blade of the Exiled for the Nintendo DS. Just like that game, Fell Seal is heavily inspired by Japanese-developed RPG classics like Final Fantasy: Tactics and Tactics Ogre.

As a result, Fell Seal features amazing tactical RPG gameplay and has some fantastic writing from a team that was clearly dedicated to creating what feels like the true successor to Final Fantasy: Tactics. It’s the perfect game for fans of Fire Emblem given that it’s very easy to lose 80 hours plus of time playing it whether it’s on the PC, Xbox One, PS4, or the Nintendo Switch.

Many might be surprised to see Dynasty Warriors on this list. What does the hack-and-slash series have in common with the tactical RPG game? Quite a lot actually. Koei Tecmo took part in bringing Three Houses to the Switch and writing the darker and more mature themes of the narrative.

The third-person view that is triggered during battle looks similar to battle in Dynasty Warriors. The two also seem to draw similar inspirations.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is the newest addition to the franchise and is a tactical RPG developed by Sega. Taking place in the same time frame as the first game, it focuses instead on a squad of young fighters composed of Commander Claude Wallace and his childhood friends, following them as they fight in the Second Europan War.
