Fire Emblem: Three Houses offers you a series of choices before you begin the game. In past Fire Emblem games these have had an impact on the rest of your adventure, so it’s understandable that players will want to know what they're getting into. Here’s a breakdown of those first few questions and the consequences of your decisions.

Decisions To Make In Fire Emblem Games

The first choice is between male and female skins for protagonist Byleth. The second is setting a birthday. Finally you will be asked if you are a ghost, demon or mortal? Here’s how your answers will effect your game.

In some Fire Emblem games your birthday will have an effect on your stats. This time around it doesn’t have such an obvious impact, but there are advantages to setting the date as close as possible. This is because when your birthday rolls around in game you will get a gift from your house leader.

The house leaders (Edelgard, Claude or Dimitri depending on your chosen house) will give you a token piece of jewellery which adds +2 to your CHA stat. While the stat boost is small, in the early game small boosts have more impact, making it worthwhile to fiddle your dates to gain the advantage quicker. The gift will be given automatically once the day comes around and there’s no need to speak directly to your house leader.

Sothis Asks A Strange Question

The other early question which feels like it should have a huge impact comes from Sothis, who coincidentally will always share your birthday, or at least that's what she tells you.

Early in your conversation Sothis asks, “I have not seen the likes of you before. Who are you anyway?” You are then given a choice of “I’m a ghost,” “I’m a demon” or “I’m a mortal.”

While this seems like a choice which will affect the game, it is in fact the opposite. Your choice between the three options has absolutely no effect at all. None whatsoever. The only difference is that if you choose either of the options that aren’t mortal, Sothis will scold you for answering incorrectly.

Since she already appears to know the answer it seems strange that she asks the question at all, unless what she really wants to know is “are you a liar?”

Regardless of Sothis' intentions, this time around you can make your early game choices without having to consider any wider consequences. Your biggest choice will be your house, something which requires much more thought.
