Fire Emblem: Three Houses is on track to become the best selling Fire Emblem game ever, according to reports from Nintendo.

On October 31, Nintendo's second-quarter financial report was published, revealing that Fire Emblem: Three Houses has sold over 2.29 million copies worldwide since its release this past July.

When compared with other past successful titles in the nearly 30-year-old franchise, Three Houses has done exceptionally well. Fire Emblem Awakening, which was released in 2012, sold over 2.28 million copies by the end of 2018, making it the second best-selling game. The current best selling game in the franchise, 2015's Fire Emblem Fates, sold 2.94 million copies by the end of 2018. The game's popularity, as well as its three different versions, have contributed to such high numbers.

However, while it took Fates three years to hit nearly 3 million in sales, Three Houses sold over 2.29 million copies in only three months. Given these impressive numbers in such a short period, it's highly likely that Three Houses will surpass Fates to become the best-selling Fire Emblem game of all time.

The Fire Emblem franchise is an RPG series developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. Since 1990, the franchise's sixteen main games have been trademarked by their fantasy aspects and tactical role-playing game mechanics. One signature aspect of all Fire Emblem titles is the permadeath feature, where characters are removed from the game if defeated in battle.

Three Houses saw the departure of some of the more traditional aspects in past Fire Emblem games: The long-standing Weapon Triangle system was discarded. The game placed more emphasis on the RPG gameplay features within the story, such as adding more exploration aspects and focusing on character support interactions. The title saw the franchise's return to a home console port, as opposed to a handheld one, which hadn't been done in twelve years. Intelligent Systems also collaborated heavily with Koei Tecmo, known for their work on the Dynasty Warriors franchise, who brought in their expertise when designing Three Houses' large-scale battles.

Despite so many changes in the established franchise, these sales show that the risks taken on Three Houses have thoroughly paid off. With holiday sales coming up, and more features coming in soon-to-be-released DLC packs, the sales for Fire Emblem: Three Houses are only just beginning.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is currently available for the Nintendo Switch.
