The first footage of the upcoming Monster Hunter movie has been revealed and it has given the fans of the series their first glimpse at how some of the monsters will look on the big screen.

The thirty-second trailer was shown during the Shanghai International Film Festival. A recording of the trailer taken on a camera phone was uploaded to the "Monster Hunter Asia" Facebook page.

The trailer shows Milla Jovovich looking on as a Diablos comes crashing out of the sand, while Tony Jaa prepares to fire an arrow at the monster. The trailer also shows Ron Perlman swinging a hammer and a Rathalos that is surrounded by flames.

The Monster Hunter movie is taking a different approach to the story of the series than the video games, as it follows a group of United Nations soldiers who arrive in the Monster Hunter world through a magic portal. Milla Jovovich plays Artemis, who is the leader of the team. It's up to her and her troops to learn how to fight the giant monsters from the local hunters, in order to prevent them from reaching their portal and making their way to Earth.

The Monster Hunter franchise is huge in Japan and has been steadily gaining ground in international territories. The fact that it's a movie filled with giant monsters means that it's likely to be a huge draw in China, as has been the case with Godzilla: King of the Monsters, even though Monster Hunter World was banned in the country after only a week of sales due to unspecified complaints about the content of the game.

The fans of Monster Hunter have expressed disappointment with the initial photos released of the movie, which showed groups of soldiers walking around with machine guns. It seemed as if the Monster Hunter film was shaping up to resemble a Call of Duty movie, but the footage of the monsters in this new trailer might be enough to soothe the initial doubts of the fanbase.

Monster Hunter is due to be released on September 4, 2020.
