Sonic Frontiers is still set to launch sometime this holiday season, although it largely remains a mystery. We know it’ll be an open world game (or “open zone” as Sega prefers to call it), and it’ll feature strangely realistic terrain in contrast to Sonic’s cartoonish proportions. Beyond that, the reveal trailer really didn’t give us much on what to expect from Sonic’s first venture into a totally new genre.

Today’s 40-second preview gives us our first look at actual gameplay from Sonic Frontiers, including what attacks Sonic will use, what he’ll be attacking, and just how fast he can traverse this new open zone (hint: it’s really fast).

It doesn’t look like Sonic will be fighting the usual Badniks from previous games. In his first encounter, Sonic’s foe looks like a strange geometric shape that attempts to stab the blue blur, only to be catapulted into the air after Sonic makes a quick ring around it. Sonic’s spin-dash attack dispatches that enemy as well as another that’s a compilation of robotic eyeballs.

At the end of the 40-second trailer, Sonic seems to take on a gigantic robot enemy Shadow of the Colossus style. Spins, punches, and kicks eventually take out some sort of power unit that destroys the colossal enemy and marks another win for Sonic.

Other than that, we see Sonic slide down rails, power some sort of ground sensor by running on a giant hamster wheel, and spinning around enemies like a thorny blue tornado.

There are still plenty of unanswered questions about Sonic Frontiers, like where he is and who he’ll be fighting, which will hopefully be answered tomorrow by IGN.

Sonic is enjoying a bit of a renaissance in no small part to the success of the movies. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is already in the works and will feature Shadow, who was teased at the end of the second film. Sonic writers Josh Miller and Patrick Casey said that they'd "love to incorporate elements from Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog" into the next film, bringing back the 20-year-old game for a totally new audience.
