Foregone is an exciting new action platformer in development that blends elements from games like Dead Cells while also incorporating permanent progression through finding stronger and better loot. Developer Big Blue Bubble was showing off their most recent build at the 2019 Enthusiast Gaming Live Expo (EGLX) in Toronto, and initial gameplay reveals a game that should be a big hit upon release.

The developer describes the game as a challenging mix of Diablo and Dark Souls, and it is easy to see why that is an apt description for the game. Players take control of a powerful Arbiter who can shoot guns or get in close to slash and stab her way through an army of monsters. This Arbiter is the game’s main female protagonist. These individuals are elite super-soldiers, highly-skilled, dangerous, and the only hope for restoring peace to the world following the War of Calagan.

A playthrough of the Foregone demo reveals a satisfying system of combat. The basic platforming is simple enough, but the often numerous opponents located in all directions makes the game challenging and requires careful thought. Diving in carelessly is a quick way to die, but there are a range of tools available to help smash through the enemy.

This comes in the form of a loot system that has opponents constantly dropping different weapons to swap out. In the long-term, this combines with an equally impressive list of upgradable skills that will make progression not only feel permanent, but customizable as well. This should not only make the game unique for different players, it should also allow for some great replayability through picking entirely different skills and weapon types in subsequent playthroughs.

The game takes a classic approach to its design with fluid pixel animation that looks fantastic and feels precise in its movement. The game was initially designed with a heavy reliance on elements common to the steampunk genre, but the team eased up on this towards the final stages of design. Still, a quick look at the game so far clearly shows the influence of the genre throughout, and it looks fantastic.

Foregone is still listed as releasing in the winter of 2019, so players do not have long to wait before being able to dive into the action. For now, readers should visit the Steam page and add the game to their Wishlist to get notifications about its eventual release. This is one game that no player should miss!
