Luminous Productions, the team behind the upcoming open-world RPG Forspoken, revealed how important different magical spells are for the game’s combat system. The devs want you to constantly experiment with everything the game has to offer to find your own playstyle.

Forspoken will tell the story of Frey (Ella Balinska), who ends up in the mystical land of Athia and learns to use various magic abilities. During an extended showcase at Tokyo Game Show 2021, the team shed some light on the project’s key gameplay mechanics. According to co-director Takefumi Terada, the magical skills of the protagonist is a pillar of Forspoken’s combat and a big part of the story.

Frey can harness various unique spells, allowing her to directly damage foes, set traps, protect herself, and many more. As Frey, you’ll be able to discover completely new abilities and upgrade ones you've already learned. The team wants people to be excited by the possibilities, and not trying to complete the game with just one style of magic or one favorite skill.

“Our goal was to allow players to learn a wide variety of spells,” Terada said, adding the game was designed to encourage players to experiment with various magic types, of which there will be plenty. Some skills the devs already showed in the game’s trailers, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg. The devs really wanted spells to suit all types of playstyles, allowing you to combine abilities with each other and even with your movement.

Takefumi Terada also referred to the game’s fast-paced traversal mechanics as the “magic parkour.” Co-director said that he really likes how “it captures what makes [...] style of development at Luminous Productions so special.” He also mentioned the game’s controls are quite simple and that magical abilities or parkour skills can each be triggered with just one button.

Forspoken Ella Balinska As Frey

Forspoken shapes out to be not only an exciting visual journey but an emotional one, too. Earlier we learned that the game’s original music is being composed by Bear McCreary (God of War) and Garry Schyman (BioShock Infinite), and the team expects you to be wowed by the sound of it.

Forspoken is scheduled for launch on PlayStation 5 and PC sometime in Spring 2022.
