Square Enix debuted a new trailer for Forspoken during today's PlayStation Showcase that confirmed it will be releasing in Spring 2022. While that's hardly a firm date, the new trailer shows the game continuing to push the boundaries of visual fidelity for the company's Luminous engine. Likely a precursor to the visuals we'll see in Final Fantasy 16, this trailer also gave us a clearer idea of what the story will be like for Square Enix's new IP.

Featuring some very modern dialogue, Forspoken puts players in the shoes of Frey Holland, a young woman who finds herself transplanted to the land of Athia from her cozy New York City apartment. Finding herself wearing a sentient magical bracelet, she'll travel Athia and battle various creatures in typical Square Enix fashion.

The glimpses of gameplay we saw paint a picture very different from what many had suspected. Touted as an open-world RPG, Square Enix fans expected something along the lines of Final Fantasy 15 thanks to the debut trailer sharing similar character models and animations. Instead, this looks more like a third-person shooter with its control scheme.

With the game roughly half a year away, there won't be much longer to wait before we get our hands on things. Forspoken will be a big test for Square Enix as its first new IP of the generation, so a lot will be riding on it. I'm not exactly sold just yet, but I can't deny that the visuals look out of this world.
