On Sunday afternoon, Fortnite went completely offline, and the game was unplayable aside from one small minigame hidden within the otherwise motionless black hole. Since you could no longer play Epic Games' battle royale third-person shooter, the minigame helped players pass the time until the game came back online... at least for a little bit.

When you logged onto Fornite, the only thing you could see was a black hole. None of the game's modes were available, and the game was completely offline thanks to an in-game event that apparently sucked the entire map into that black hole. Although Epic Games advertised this as the "end of Fortnite," it was much more likely to be a marketing campaign for the game's next season.

There was one very small game you could access within Fortnite, although it wasn't as immersive as what battle royale players were used to. The game was more or less a Fortnite-themed version of the classic Space Invaders, replacing spaceships with Durrr! Burgers and Pizza Pit toppings, referencing the two fast-food chains that exist in the world of Fortnite. You played as a piece of pepperoni pizza while firing at Durrr! Burgers. It might not have been Fortnite, but it was a fun way to spend a couple of minutes.

In order to access this mini-game, players had to enter a specific code at the black hole screen. For PC players, the code was: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, ENTER. For console players, the code was almost the same, but "B, A, ENTER" was replaced with "O, X, Options" on PS4 and "B, A, Start" on Xbox. After players entered these codes, they would be able to play Space Invaders, or Burger Invaders, or whatever you want to call it.

Fortnite is now back up and running with a brand new competitive season and map. Although the game remains one of the most popular battle royales, Fortnite has seen a slight drop in popularity over the past year, and Epic Games is hoping that this brand new season will bring more hype. Taking the game completely offline is a pretty gutsy marketing strategy, but here's to hoping it pays off.
