A countdown clock has mysteriously appeared in Fortnite, so naturally, fans have been wildly speculating about what it could mean.

When you explain the entire concept of Fortnite to someone who doesn't play the game, it can likely sound like something that would get very boring pretty quickly. Thankfully, that is not the case as most of you who play the game will know. Epic Games, the minds behind Fortnite, are constantly updating, changing, and adding new modes in order to keep us fans playing.

The biggest of those changes normally come when one Fortnite season moves into another. Take the move from season three to four, for example. During the closing stages of season three, Epic teased that a meteor was going to hit the map. It did, leaving a couple of craters and even spurring a memorable Limited Time Mode where players could capture the Infinity Gauntlet and become Thanos.

Season five is set to begin on July 12, 2018, and the warning signs have begun as to what it might bring. An evil lair housing a pretty intimidating looking missile has popped up, and presumably, that missile is going to be launched at some point. That belief has been compounded this week as a timer has popped up, as reported by PC Gamer.

The only confusing thing about the timer is that it ends a lot sooner than July 12, so whatever it is counting down to is going to happen well before the end of season four. That either means that the missile will linger in the air for a while, hanging ominously over the map, or it is going to destroy a portion of the map early on, much like meteorites did towards the end of season three.

If you were one of the skeptical few that didn't understand the allure of Fortnite when you started this article, hopefully, the intrigue of countdown clocks and missiles has convinced you otherwise. The meteors in season three had the Fortnite world talking, and if anything the scenes that will take us into season five have generated even more buzz. Keep an eye on that clock, and let's see what happens.
